View Full Version : Halloween Candy Warning

I have received this same email from two concerned moms, in two different areas of the country.
In this day and age, you can never be too careful, so I felt it was worth mentioning.

With Halloween fast approaching comes a warning to parents and kids regarding Sherwood brand Pirate's Gold milk chocolate coins imported from China.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to eat, distribute or sell the candy.

It is sold across Canada by Costco and may also have been sold in bulk packages or as individual pieces at various dollar and bulk stores.

The chocolate contains melamine which is the same chemical responsible for killing several babies in China, and sickening thousands more.

Let's make Halloween as safe as possible for our kiddos!

Happy trick-or-treating!

Just realised - All Hallows Day is almost upon us. I will have to get some candy in - not the above brand of course.

Last year I got lots of candy in and had no visitors - I had to eat it all myself :(

Although Sherwoods brands state that they have not sold any of these sweets in the US, it is possible (in my opinion) for a well meaning person to hand these sweets out having purchased them in Canada and then taken them home to the USA.

Best to be careful of these sweeties if encountered anywhere.

I put a stop to that nonsense the year I handed out raw broccoli spears.

I do, but dad buys all the candy we give out.

Me neither, but you never know who might buy candy from the dollar store, and where the dollar store gets their candy.
I'm not taking any chances. If I see chocolate coins this Halloween I will throw them away no matter WHAT BRAND they are!

Come to think of it, we always buy those at Christmas for stocking stuffers. Call me paranoid, but I probably won't be doing that this year!

This is great info, thanks! This is my first year to actually buy candy myself (I lived in residence the last two years, so trick-or-treaters don't come there, and before that I was still living with my parents so they buy all the candy)

I can't wait until I have my own house. Then I can decorate how I want, and give candy out to all the neighbor kids. My mom doesn't really get into Halloween as much as I do, so I never have pushed the whole decorating thing. We decorate some every once in a while, but typically not much.

There are ways to make the day fun for the kids and family. I've never liked the holiday, but I think it is good to do fun things with the kids on that day, and I'm not opposed to allowing them to dress up and visit neighbors to get a bag full of candy. I don't live in a neighborhood, so our kids didn't go around this year. For myself, I don't get all worked up about it. We don't celebrate anyone or anything in particular during that time. It is sort of like how non-Christians celebrate Christmas. They don't do it for Jesus, and Christ isn't honored by their celebration.

Yeah, that's pretty much how my family has celebrated Halloween. Most of the time we're not even home for Halloween night, because we usually either go to a party, or we go trick-or-treating with friends. Well, my little brother is the only one who still goes trick-or-treating. This year my parents are taking my little brother to go around with one of his friends in said friend's neighborhood. I don't think the rest of us are really going to do anything. Unless my brother and I decide to go see my school's performance of Sweeney Todd.

I don't like the really scary side of Halloween. For me it's just more about candy and carving pumpkins and having fun while you dress up. I can't do haunted houses and when I went trick-or-treating as a child, whenever I saw a house that was scarily decorated, I usually wanted to avoid it. Halloween is for having fun, and being terrified is not fun. For me, at least.

My mom loves decorating for any occasion. Growing up, we would always have a Halloween tree, and an Easter tree, and the house was usually decorated for Thanksgiving, St. Patrick's Day...you name, we decorate for it.

I could see myself being that way. I just like holidays in general, and I get into decorating. My grandma is that way, so maybe it's an inherited trait. :)

Yes. Not even free candy would be good if it was poisoned.

Hallowen is not big here in Auz. What started the tradition of halloween in the first place?

I got out of the Halloween thing for a while until my nieces and nephews came along. Now my bros bring them by the house all dressed up, so I figured I should be dressed up ready to hand out candy :)

So the extent of my Halloween celebration consists of watching It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (cause it's not the holidays without Charlie Brown!), then carving a pumpkin. Then dressing up to hand out candy.

I love holidays in general too. I really get into it, dressing up and passing out candy, watching the 7 hour live feed of Ghosthunters every year.

This year we're celebrating not only Halloween, but the kick off of NaNoWriMo *National Novel Writing Month*. I'm having some friends come by on Friday evening to hang out and pass out candy then we're heading to the NaNo kick off party at 11:30. And yeah, we're all dressing up just cuz we can! And all of us in our mid 20's.... :P

And he says that with a SAD face?!? :P

We get so few kids each year, it isn't even worth it to buy the candy anymore, so at the risk of some holiday cross-contamination, we were Scrooges last year, didn't buy any candy (not until the half price sales the next day! :D ), and left the porch light turned out. I guess we'll be doing it again this year too.

...If I see chocolate coins this Halloween I will throw them away no matter WHAT BRAND they are!...

I'd just watch out for ANY candy made in China.

Or food of any kind from them apparently, have you seen the latest? Now they're finding EGGS that are contaminated with melanine in China now. Now, I can see how they could add the stuff to watered down milk and make it look okay, but how the heck do you add melanine to an egg!?! Aren't they kind of, well, self contained, right out of the chicken? Do people put the stuff in the chicken feed (much like they did with the pet food  ) and contaminate the chickens and as a result, their eggs?

Not safe to buy anything from China these days. All 5 produce recalls for the week that were listed in the paper on Sunday were from China. I think China's Quality Control division needs to be recalled.
