View Full Version : OMG, New York

Wow, so I went to New York for the 1st time. It's actually pretty sad that it was my 1st time considering I live in PA.
I've been thru it before, like driving, but the only time we'd get out is for gas,bathroom/food.
So yesterday I took a bus trip there with my friend for a peta conference, which was amazing....
I don't know how ppl that live there do it! I was in NYC, and holy crap, I went down one street and could barley even see the sky!
I live in a small village in the country with trees and cows EVERYWHERE.
I was really sad that there were no trees, and then bencho (my friend, who loves the city) was like, there's a tree gooshawn, and it was fake! Why have fake trees? Lol.
If it weren't for her I'd be so lost.
The subway, omg, I was terrified. Some I almost got arrested b/c some guy came over when I was getting my subway ticket, and I thought he was trying to help me, and he hands me this card and some cop comes over and he's like "that's illegal, you can't do those kinds of transactions here." and I had no idea what was going on! Bencho came over and thold the guy I'd never been to a city bigger than Wilks-barre before so he left.
So after the conference we had a kfc protest (kfccruelty.com if you wanna know why)
We painted our faces white and had fake blood on and signs that said, "I'd rather be dead than eat at KFC"
So all 20-30 of us got on a subway like that, and some guy started yelling at us and freaking out saying that we have no right to do this and stuff, and I was terrified b/c he had his hands in his pockets and I though he had a knife or something.
I'm soooo glad to be home. Back in my tree-filled village with cows as neighbors.
Do any of you guys live in NYC or a big city like that? How do you do it?! I'd die. Or be killed, or in jail, lol.

I just took my first ever trip to NYC for a weekend a month ago and had a great time. Of course I was there for a baseball game at Shea Stadium and to meet the boyfriend's parents for the first time, not attend a PETA conference covered in fake blood, so that might partly explain the difference in our trips. ;) (Although doing the "Meet the Parents" thing WAS a little nervewracking, I must admit, lol.)
I've never lived in a really small town, so I didn't get that jaw dropping sense of  while I was there, plus I've done trips to several "big cities" before, so even though this was actually my first trip into NYC, it just felt like a larger (MUCH larger!) version of some of those other city trips, so I was probably just more comfortable with it because of that too. Getting off the train from Long Island right in the middle of downtown Manhattan, it didn't feel all that much different getting off a Metro train in the middle of Washington DC or hopping off a transit bus in the middle of downtown Toronto.
Glad you made it back in one piece. I know as good of a time that I had on the trip, I was seriously glad to be home once I got back. :)

I love NYC....though I certainly wouldn't want to live there. I used to hop on the train to go for just day trips. I love the architecture in cities, NYC in particular. And the cool neighborhoods.....it's so much fun wandering Chinatown and Little Italy....you never know what you might come across. Last time I went to Little Italy, there was a street festival going on....and there was a guy in the middle of the street singing opera...pretty cool!
Of course you have to keep an eye out for the weirdos....cities are full of them. But in all my trips to NYC, I've never had any major problems.
Now I am down in Austin...battling the traffic and sometimes wishing I was back in Connecticut where I was surrounded by cows and trees too! :-) At least it's a smaller city than NYC.

You live in Austin now, you are surrounded by weirdos. Please note all the bumper stickers and shirts that proudly proclaim "Keep Austin Weird"
I went to NYC a couple of summers ago and loved it!! Then again I have grown up in a big city so the people and noise didn't bother me. The subways system is the way to travel man. Favorite vacation spot ever!

I actually didn't see any weirdos in NYC, just lots and Lots and LOTS of people. It was actually pretty quiet when we got off the train from Long Island on our way to the Empire State Building, enough so that I was actually a little disappointed, I expected NYC to be just this mass of humanity and traffic and wall to wall honking cabs, etc. And it was none of that, it was just too quiet. The air reeked though. *cough cough*
By the time we got done at the Empire State Building and started walking down to Rockerfeller Center and Time Square, that had all changed. Oh DID it change! While we'd been up 86 and 102 floors, apparently the city that "never sleeps" finally woke up. Suddenly it WAS just "this mass of humanity and traffic and wall to wall honking cabs". Kind of exhilarating, initially, and great to see places I'd only seen on TV before, but when it was time to hop back on the train to go to the baseball game at Shea, I was ready.
The quirkiest thing of note that I saw while we were out walking around was that there was a garbage can that was smoking, really puffing out smoke, as we walked by it. I just figured it was like the steam that comes out the the manhole covers in the street, and didn't think much more about it. Until about 3 minutes later suddenly the fire department comes screaming around the corner to put out the fire in said garbage can. LOL. I guess it actually WASN'T supposed to be smoking. Kinda funny. :D

I had to laugh at your "city that never sleeps" because I think that more describes Las Vegas than NYC.
I know way too much about NYC since my BFF lives there. By the time I move east next year, I'll know the city pretty well I think! :P
The biggest city I've ever been in was Las Vegas. And let me tell you, Vegas on July 4th weekend *or the weekend of the Tyson fight, which is a whole other story...* is incredibly packed. There were really a lot of Asians, more than I think I've ever seen in my whole life! You could practically squeeze in between two people and let them just carry you down the road...
My whole county is only about 1million people, so I can't really say Tucson is a large city, but it is the second largest in Arizona. I actually can't wait to visit my friend in the city next year for NASCAR Championship week!!

guys, seriously, the whole
"i had chicken" thing, whats the point?
are you just trying to piss me off?
i get enough of it. i like these boards b/c everyone's like family, and that kinda stuff makes me want to leave.
I'm really not trying to whine and complain, but honestly, theres no reason for it.
The protest wasn't against meat, it was against the ways kfc handles their chickens. They kill them and raise them in the cheapist ways possible, and the chickens suffer for it.
There;s been footage of the workers abuseing these chickens in awful ways, and laughing about it.
I am happy to say, that the kfc in canada (undere a different company)
has made the nessicary changes, and even added a vegan sandwhich to the menu!
but jason, ur in arizona, so unless you went up 2 canada 4 some lunch, grrr

Jenn (or is it Jen?), I'm not saying we shouldn't care about animals and I'm not suggesting you shouldn't be fighting for their ethical treatment. I just detest (yes, detest) the activities of PETA. Notice, I said the activities, not the people.
And even though I eat meat, I'm not out to convince you to eat meat.

My favorite "I did it all by myself and made it back in one piece" tale is probably when my mom and I went to Canada to see Niagara Falls and made a side trip into Mississauga to visit with a coworker who I'd only worked with on the phone and via email, and while we were there, I wanted to zip over to Toronto to go to the Hockey Hall of Fame. So on one of the days, when Mom was down with a monster headache, I went ahead and mapped it out, took her Camry and headed in the general direction of Toronto.
Never made it that day though. I was about half way there, and her car had to pick THAT very moment to have the transmission go out. I was stopped at a light, the light turned green, I stepped on the gas and NOTHING happened. With lots of help from a couple of very friendly Canadians, eh (they really DID say that!) and AAA (CAA up there, or maybe it was C-eh-eh? lol :P ) I managed to get the car back to the motel. We got it to a repair shop the next morning and then found ourselves stuck in Nowheresville, Mississauga for another couple of days while they waited for parts to come in.
One of the days we were stuck there, I made my second attempt to get to the HHOF. This time by bus. The stop was about a mile from the motel, but it was a direct line from that stop right into downtown Toronto, about a block from the HHOF. So leaving mom behind again, I struck out on my own, took the bus, made it into Toronto, had a blast at the HHOF, contemplated going up the CN Tower, decided I was too chicken to do THAT by myself (google it, you'll understand why), plus I was terrified of missing my return bus, and just took the bus back into Mississauga again.
Probably my favorite "I did it all by my lonesome!" big city travel moment. :D

I totally agree with you there bud. PETA freaks me out and I just don't like the entire organization. Not that the people are bad, as we can see we have a sweet and very determined member here, but I just don't like what they do.
Don't get me wrong here, I love ALL animals and I despise the abuse, neglect, and cruel treatment. I just don't take my view to extremes............

Haha I know how you feel though. I had to bus it all across San Antonio, which is NOT fun! Thats is a huge city. I had to travel from the airport on the northwest side of town clear to the south side at Lackland! Sad thing was that it was my first out of state trip alone. Scary for me at 21.

And as much as I'm gushing about it right now, I don't want to live there. Or any other big city for that matter. It's just not my thing. Visiting on occasion is fine for me. :)

I will say something about cities down here; they tend to spread out, which I think would give the illusion of not being as big. D.C. seemed to be a lot more concentrated than either Memphis or Nashville.

I haven't been to most of those cities, but I have been to Atlanta, and I can believe that it's #1. The first thing I thought when I went there for the first time was how huge it was. I had always thought the Nashville was pretty spread out, but not as near as much as Atlanta.
I see that D.C. is #4 and neither Memphis or Nashville are in the top 30, which could prove my theory wrong. Or it could just mean that how we're measuring these particular cities differs. For example, I suppose that Nashville proper isn't all that humongous, but around here, when we talk about Nashville we really include all of Davidson County and perhaps even areas in the surrounding counties depending on how generalized the conversation is. That might explain it. Or I just may have no idea what I'm talking about. That's entirely plausible, too. ;)

Also, that list only measured growth in square mileage from 1970-1990. There are some cities in Alaska that are huge in regards to square mileage but haven't grown much. The Phoenix metropolitan area includes many cities, such as Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, El Mirage, Sun City, Buckeye, Avondale, etc. But these lists only calculate Phoenix itself.

I could go on but Phoenix is only like 4-5 degrees hotter than Tucson. I don't like Phoenix because its a wretched city. Its mostly the traffic I hate.
I actually had KFC today.
Original or extra crispy?
I'm having ground cow for dinner tonight!
Chicago is not scary...well most of it anyway...has the culture, shopping, sports, art, restaurants AND beaches! (right, Mac?)

I have been to Chicago, well the airport at least. I spend 8 of the most miserable hours of my life at O'Hare due to plane delays.

are you just trying to piss me off?
i get enough of it. i like these boards b/c everyone's like family, and that kinda stuff makes me want to leave.
I'm really not trying to whine and complain, but honestly, theres no reason for it.
The protest wasn't against meat, it was against the ways kfc handles their chickens. They kill them and raise them in the cheapist ways possible, and the chickens suffer for it.
There;s been footage of the workers abuseing these chickens in awful ways, and laughing about it.
seriously have you nothing else better to do?
since when has it become okay to put someone down for taking the initiative to stand up for what they believe in? just b/c u don't agree? thats just wrong. period.

PETA is against ALL forms of the killing of animals. Not just the messy methods but the clean humane methods. We are not against your stance at all. But what you don't understand is how wacked those peta extremists are. They their beliefs and ideology are perverted and dangerous.
No one is questioning your beliefs and stances about animal welfare what we are concerned about and question is your love and association with perverted PETA

I am with them 100% on that.
I don't care how an animal is killed.
Killing for wants, not needs, is completly and utterly wrong.
We are sooo far beyond that.
And don't give me any bull about needing meat to survive, because, and this isn't even from Peta, vegetarian's live on average 14 years longer than the average meat eater, and are at over 50% less likley for heart disease. Not to mention all the meat substitutes.

this still doesn't negate the fact how logically dumb PETA is. Lets think about this for a second.
PETA is crying to ben and jerries ice cream for using cows milk in their desserts. Instead PETA wants them to use breast milk from women because its animal cruralty to milk a cow
now common sense will tell you(of which PETA lacks appartently) that a cow needs to be milked or else it hurts them which is far MORE painful on a cow
now that same common sense will tell you it also doesn't make the woman feel good to be milked for ice cream day after day after day.
this make no sense in my mind whatsoever. It seems to me they'd rather make a human being uncomfortable to make the cow feel better which in the long run it doesn't because being left un milked is extremely uncomfortable on a cow.
Cows were meant to be milked not humans.
This is just one example of their lunatic logic
you say killing an animal is wrong????????????
well then God must have been wrong when he told Peter to kill and eat. he also must have been wrong when he, in the OT required animals as sacrifices
I can understand you not wanting to eat them(which by the way is rather unhealthy cause you need meat to have a balanced diet)
but to say that killing an animal is wrong it is highly disturbing.
let me ask you something
is war ok and justifiable in some cases??????? I am not talking about our current war. Im talking in general.

haha, wow, it was pretty much to say "how would you like to be milked for a dairy treat everyday" but the media twisted it to make em look stupied.
some people just don't get sarcasm ;)
and cows, like people, make enough milk for thier young, do people have any to spare? no.
they don't randomly produce milk, only for their young, so they're impregnated, then the claves are sent for veal, never getting a drop of their mother's milk.
but hey, what's this got to do with new york?
i was just in amazment with how BIG it was and how many ppl were theere, it's like, whoa!

I'd go see a Broadway show. That's really all I want to do in New York. So if I was there a week, I'd go to a show every night. :D

I don't even know for sure what's running right now. :P
Um, I think the Lion King is still going. I definitely want to see that. Other than that, I'm not sure. I know Beauty and the Beast isn't going anymore, so I can't see that. I'd have to do some research to say for sure what other ones would interest me.

i heard that they had some really nice parks there.
i'd probably go into one of those stores where a pair of socks is like, $50, just to have those people fawn over you so you'll buy something, lol.
i'd go to see where the twin towers went down.
i'm not really sure what else though.
I went in the summer to see the statue of liberty with my lil bro's boy scouts.
they don't allow you to the top anymore.
it was pretty scarry getting there considering i'm afraid of boats, lol!
