I'm working on this new piece, Lion's Roar, inspired by BJ's photo.
BJ's photo first and then my artwork:

Truly awesome Jason. Reminds me of Hosea 11:10-11 "They will walk after the LORD, He will roar like a lion, Indeed He will roar, and His sons will come trembling from the west. They will come trembling like birds from Egypt, and like doves from the land of Assyria. And I will settle them in their houses, declares the LORD".

Oh wow! Well, I thought of a scripture too, but a totally different one. I thought of 1 Peter 5:8 about the devil walking around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But your picture is cool!

It's very different from the photo, but I like it. :) The fact that it is different is part of what makes it good.

Hey Jason,
I like this as a good beginning, but I would suggest thickening the hair on the top of the head and between the clumps on the upper back. You could also make the incisors in each jaw somewhat larger. Your lion lacks the orange tones of the natural one, but that may be by design. A little orange highlights may add to this piece though. It looks good so far.

Hi, Shane. Thanks for your comments. I can't change the mane though because it's part of a 3D model. Same for the incisors. Part of the original's orangeness is lighting, which I may try to recreate. I also want to add foliage like BJ's photo.

Well, it's a shame you can't at least thicken the hair on top of his head. I really like the lion, but I guess it's just hard to use a 3D model to recreate the lushness of the real animal's hair.
I hope the lighting will give him a bit more of an orange tint. I think that would bring him closer to the real one in the photo, though I have seen photos with lions that were more of only the tan and brown tones like yours, so I guess that's a matter of taste.
I think a foliage background would definitely add to the work as a whole.
I have always wondered just how many hours you put into your works? They must take you a while from concept to finished piece.

Hey Jason,
Did you do any new lighting and background foliage yet? I'm sure that will make it look even cooler.

He really needs some hair on top - otherwise he might end up being 'the punk lions roar' :P Another cool looking pic jace. Looking forward to the finnished result. You do some beautiful work.
