I was reading on wikipedia about this girl and couldn't believe what I was reading:

Early life
Perry was born in Santa Barbara, California, USA. The middle child of two pastors,[1] she grew up listening to gospel music and singing in church.[3] Katy Perry graduated from Chaparral High School in Temecula, California in 2003 and immediately moved to Los Angeles at the age of 17 [4] After Steve Thomas and Jennifer Knapp signed Perry to their label Red Hill Records, she released her first CD Katy Hudson in 2001, a Christian gospel album.[5] According to several Christian radio stations, Katy Perry's most recent album One of The Boys has raised a considerable amount of controversy as her single "I Kissed a Girl" promotes sexual activity that conflicts with her Christian upbringing; on the other hand, the single "Ur So Gay" has been interpreted as being homophobic for its derogatory use of the word "gay". In her teenage years, Perry found a Queen album with her friend, "From then on, they have been my biggest influence".[6] Also among her musical influences are Alanis Morissette[7] as well as Heart and Joni Mitchell.[8] Perry changed her surname to Perry because "Katy Hudson" was too close to Kate Hudson.[9] Perry was her mother's maiden name.[1]

Early career
In 2004, Perry worked for the record production team The Matrix, who had previously worked with Avril Lavigne, Liz Phair, KoRn and Britney Spears, among others. Perry also began working on a debut mainstream album, writing with Glen Ballard, which was due for release in 2005; some of the collaborations included "Box" and "Diamonds," which were released on Perry's official MySpace page. Her burgeoning music career led to her being named "The Next Big Thing" in October 2004 in Blender Magazine, where Perry stated she wasn't "a typical Christian", mentioning that she had done "lots of bad things" during her adolescence.[10] One of the tracks she recorded with Ballard, "Simple", was released on the soundtrack of the 2005 film The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.[11] In 2006, Perry appeared on P.O.D.'s single, "Goodbye for Now".[12] She has openly talked about her struggles within the music industry, such as being dropped from record labels for much of her early career. Her songs eventually captured the attention of Virgin Records CEO Jason Flom, who was the head of Capitol Music Group, and she signed to Capitol Music in early-2007. Perry is now regularly heard on MTV, VH1, as well as commercials. She most recently appeared on the reality TV show So You Think You Can Dance, singing her hit, "I Kissed a Girl".

One of the Boys
After signing to Capitol Records, Perry began recording for her official mainstream debut album, released in 2008, working with Greg Wells, Dr. Luke, Butch Walker, Max Martin, Cathy Dennis, Dave Stewart, and Ted Bruner. The full length album titled One of the Boys was released in the USA on June 17, 2008.[13] Katy was an act in the 2008 Vans Warped Tour to promote the album.

The album was preceded by a digital EP in late 2007, entitled "Ur So Gay", produced by and co-written with Greg Wells (OneRepublic, Mika). A video for the song premiered in early 2008, and brought Perry to the attention of Madonna, who mentioned her on KISS FM & KRQ's JohnJay & Rich morning show in Arizona, stating that "Ur So Gay" was her "favorite song right now,"[14] as well as another mention on Ryan Seacrest's Morning Show. "Ur So Gay" has been criticized for alleged homophobia.[15][9][16][17]

On April 29, 2008, her first official single from One of the Boys, "I Kissed a Girl", debuted on the iTunes Store. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #76, climbing to #1 as of June 25, 2008. It has peaked on iTunes Top 100 at #1, as of June 3, 2008. The music video for "I Kissed a Girl" was released on May 21, 2008 on MySpace. The song has generated controversy due to its popularity with children and its depiction of sexuality, homosexuality, and promiscuity.[18] In contrast, an essay in Slant Magazine argues that the song "isn't problematic because it promotes homosexuality, but because its appropriation of the gay lifestyle exists for the sole purpose of garnering attention—both from Perry's boyfriend and her audience."[17]

In addition, she has had songs from the album featured on MTV's series, The Hills ("Self Inflicted", "Waking Up In Vegas" and "Thinking Of You"), on Oxygen Network's reality series, Fight Girls, and on the 2008 film Baby Mama ("Fingerprints"). She was also featured on P.O.D.'s 2006 single "Goodbye for Now".

As an actress, she made a cameo appearance on Carbon Leaf's video "Learn to Fly" and on Gym Class Heroes' video "Cupid's Chokehold", playing the eventual love interest for her real life boyfriend, lead singer Travis McCoy.[19] On March 10, 2008, she appeared as herself on ABC Family's Wildfire (episode titled "Life's Too Short").[20] She has appeared in advertisements for Too Faced Cosmetics' Spring 2007 line. On June 12, 2008, Perry appeared as herself on the daytime soap opera, The Young and the Restless, who poses for the cover of the fictional magazine Restless Style, that same day she appeared on MTV's Total Request Live.

so what's the deal? can we say for sure that she abandoned the faith? her biggest hit is "i kissed a girl and i liked it" but she had a gospel album too. i didn't know that was her singing on goodbye for now by p.o.d. either. I don't know, can anyone explain this?

She recently said "I doesn't want to be a role model, if you want a role model pick Miley Cyrus". Whatever THAT means!

Sounds like the girl is sowing her wild oats a bit! I bet her parents are thrilled.

A few friends that had too strict of an upbringing backfired and then went a little wild for awhile. I'm not saying that this is what this girl is doing. Just because she was raised in the faith doesn't mean it was a good experience for her.

haha sandy. she joked she was saving herself for miley cyrus too (at least i hope it was a joke), and my sister says she sings backup on miley's new album for a couple of songs so she seems to have some weird obsession with miley lol.

yeah mindy, i know a feel people like that too. seems like that's possible. both parents were pastors, she sang gospel her whole life, even made a gospel album. i guess it was too much, too soon for her.

i have to admit, the song has a great beat and she has a great voice. if only the lyrics were better.

I find myself singing it from time to time. It is a catchy tune.

I sing it but I switch "boy" for "girl". Because I have kissed a boy and I did like it.

LOL! I may not get weird looks anymore if I follow suit and do the same.

I think she's very talented, but I think that she's rebelling hardcore.

I've known quite a few preacher's kids, and, to generalize, they are either squeaky clean over-achievers, or reckless rebels without a cause. It seems that Katy is the later. She strikes me as one who likes to see what happens when she pushes buttons.

Generally speaking, yes, that is true. I'm related to a slew of preachers, and therefore a slew of preacher's kids. My dad's one of them, a preacher's kid, that is. I do know a few exceptions to the rule, but they are few and far between.

This makes me so sad..
As a teen hearing this song everywhere i get so down about how the world is saying these things are not only ok but this song is on the top of the music charts!
The Lyrics to this song were even on a shirt at one of my favorite stores!
I was so upset when I heard some girls from my YOUTH talking about how they almost even bought the shirt!
Our youth needs prayer, and alot of it..
And as for Miley Cyrus.. She is a great role model I believe..
I think Katy Perry is jealous of her faith and how she's kept it..
so props to Miley! :)
You go girl..

Miley is not a good role model. No good role model takes seductive pictures of themselves like that, and she's also very arrogant.

All sins are equal. God forgives, It's the church who has problems forgiving.
And being the same age as Miley and knowing how it is to be a teenage girl in this forsaken world I know that we do things we're not proud of, she just happens to have a news crew behind her watching her every move..

All sins are equal. God forgives, .Yes He does, but that is no means an excuse to sin, neither is age or how bad this world is. Of all the Disney girls that I think is the most upstanding is Raven Simone. But unlike Miley and others, she isn't in the spotlight 24-7.

I can decide to reserve any judgment on Katy or Miley and just decide whether or not I like the music, lyrics, etc. I heard a performance on video of Katy once that was less than stellar, but I also heard she was sick at that performance. I like her music, don't care for a lot of the lyrics. I have so many artists I love, that I just am sitting it out. As for Miley, I just haven't really listened.

As for role models, it's probably best not to look to artists. They are all human, as are we. I absolutely love artists. I have a real heart for them, but I try really hard to see their humanity. They fail lots, just like the rest of us.
