does anyone know if it would be good to invest in a volume pedal for going back and forth between solo's and rhythm?

You could always "Jimmy Page" it, and just use the volume knobs on your guitar.

word.
pedals and effects have neutered the modern guitarist.
Maybe you could just yell 'hey sound guy turn me up!' whenever you get to your solo.
Seriously, whenever there's some kind soloing going on we always turn 'em up at the board... at church we ask our musicians to not touch volumes at all once they get going... so if you have somebody running a board at FOH, you might want to get his opinion.

my uncle suggested i use my volume knobs on the guitar.. just like Greyshades suggested.
I was looking at it for the blues band at my school and we dont run anything but the singer's mic's through a PA.
Last year i was running through my Fender Strat and a Mesa Roadster of my uncles. This year i'm running through my Gibson LP and a Line 6 75w Spider III solid state.
The pickups aren't as hot on the LP as the ones on the strat, so i've just gotta get used to the differance.

Thats a video of us playing last year at a spring football game halftime show. Idk what happened with the volume when i went into the solo for Sweet Home Chicago. It just didn't do anything.
Note: I'm the one with the long hair playing the strat

I usually just hit the boost option on my amp or set my OCD up to cut through the mix depending what's happening.... A volume pedal will not increase the volume... At it's max it'll be unity, unless you plan on setting everything louder than what you need and just back off the volume pedal until you go for your solo.

well that was the plan.
here's what i've got to work with- a Line 6 75w solid state amp. no footswich. A Ibanez Tube Screamer and a Dunlop Cry Baby Wah.
So i'm kinda struggling as what to do about the volume.
maybe when i turn the amp up louder, the volume change will be more apparent than when it's turned down, but i really can't tell the difference as it is right now..

so i take it you're using the tubescreamer the whole time then?

quite a bit.
I thought earlier about using the tubescreamer for my boost, but that would mean setting my channel a bit differant for the sound i want..
not a bad idea though..:D

The best way to use pedals is to think of them as tools to add to not be heavily reliant on for your tone... I have a smaller pedal board where the only OD/Distortion I have is an OD and Fuzz Pedal everything else are delay/modulation/filters... You should be able to find a general basic tone you like from the amp and use the TS to push the amp a bit for the solos... I had 3 tube screamers and rarely use them anymore, they're very shrill to me and the treble kills me, and there's a lack of a bass end to them. But if you stick to the mids a lot it should work for you.

definatly a good idea.
something i dont have on my board right now but i have sitting around is a Boss DS-1.
I'm pretty low tech when it comes to setting up stuff like pedal boards with sounds.. that would probably help me give a volume boost somewhat, right?

The Edge is a big influence on me and just playing clean and dirty is no fun.
Honestly I would suggest trying to save up and get something a bit better then a DS-1, again very shrill and last time I played one didn't have much character to it, not trying to bust on your gear, I had one back in the day, and got rid of it, when I started trying to find my tone. If you scour the local guitar center you can usually find good deals. I found a Maxon OD9 (The Better version of a TS9) for 35 bucks.

play through as many as you possibly can.... I use an OCD, but my friend swears by the Xotic AC Booster. And BBE is putting out some great pedals that aren't going to kill a budget... It's all in your ears.

When i get up to George's Music again, i'll check them all out.

Definitely get a microamp or a distortion pedal to give you more volume for lead.
Another cool thing is to use a volume pedal with a lush delay/reverb and create really cool volume swells. Nice effect.
