I was hoping some of you who listen to some of the heavy metal type Christian rock could enlighten me. I have a child (13 yrs old) who really likes this style of music & I am trying to find stuff that is appropriate for him. I saw some videos of a few artists that I think he would like & in particular I have a question on a band called Demon Hunter. The video was "Carry Me Down" & I will admit it was good! (Back in the day, before I was saved I listened to a bit of heavy metal myself like Pantera). So...it used to be that you couldn't find this type of music with good lyrical content and Christian members. I know that their website says they are Christians and the lyrics to that song suggested such, but when I looked at some other songs, I wasn't so sure about those lyrics.

Also, I think he would like Red, Fireflight, Family Force 5, MPXX (I think) & P.O.D. Some of those I know are more Metal/Rap. Any other suggestions for me to check out?

what lyrics in Demon Hunter suggest something other than Christianity?

If he likes Fireflight, he would probably also like Flyleaf. Their styles are very similar. Flyleaf gets airtime on "secular" stations, but they are a Christian band, and their lyrics show it...and they're great musicians.

I wasn't sure about "Sixteen" but I just reread it and think I took it wrong. But can anyone tell me what this song is about? I'm curious?

My 16 year old is into heavy metal and punk, mostly the Christian stuff thankfully... I'm 48 so I can cope with the punk, but the screamo/heavy metal - well I'm not so sure about - those voices freak me out a little (well a lot really)...:)

Old school!! I used to listen to Skillet when I was in Jr high! That was 12 years ago now..Oh my. I even have a pic of me and my ex with them from SWC 2002.

My mom is 44 and she LOVES screamo, her fave band is UnderOATH. Then again, she is a little younger than you. :P

hmm, i'm not really sure if underoath is really true metal, but they are good screamo if you like that kind of stuff. their new stuff is a little bit harder than it has been. one of my favorite bands is demon hunter. not really screamo, i wouldn't describe his vocals as screaming. it's closer to growling. and he mixes it up by singing and is one of the best singers in rock today. their lyrics are very Christian, just look at the whole album for Storm the Gates of Hell. it's crazy good for gettin you fired up about living for God. As I Lay Dying has some melody but is usually in your face screamo. another good one is Norma Jean, their new stuff is a little less screamo and a little more melody and singing, so if you're not so much into screamo, that would be good to listen to.

as far as non-screaming metal...well, besides stryper, i can't think of any true metal right off. i'm talkin like metallica style metal, not what they call metal today (nu-metal).

Unstereotypical would be the man to talk to about Christian Metal. Hopefully he'll see your post.

I do have to say though, that even though I don't listen to much Metal, Extol (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZagb0e15ZI) (YouTube) has caught my attention.

okay, so back in the day I really did enjoy a bit of metal. After being saved, with the typical lyrical content I thought I would never get to enjoy any as I really don't even listen to anything but Christian music now. With having a teenager wanting to hear metal, I was apprehensive. But I have to say that finding that there is Christian metal to chose from...pretty cool. So far in screening for my child, not only am I approving but finding myself with songs that I love! Demon Hunter- "Carry Me Down" & "1000 Apologies" and Pillar "Everything" & "Bring Me Down" so far are my faves. Thanks for the tips!

Here's a band to check out. I can't believe I forgot these guys.

Oh, Sleeper.

www.myspace.com/ohsleeper

Their song "Vices Like Viper's" is what got me listening to them. The song takes a couple differant twists as far as subject matter, but its still a great song. It starts out talking about what happens when we make ourselves God. "When I Am God, This Church is Unsound!"

and then skips to talking to girls about how they feel they should look beautiful.
"And to the girls you're worth more, than cheap words. You see your body as beauty, you're pulse is worth more."

and then it focuses on the writers own struggles with Pornography.
"this my lusts, the pornos and the sluts. Take my lusts, this worlds love. Great Counsilor, Take what's left... Great Counsilor, take whats left of me.."

this song pretty much hit home to me, as far as what i was beginning to think about the youth group in my church and made me examine how i was living my life...

There's a concert I want to go to in November that's on a school night. And it's about 2 hours away. But I'm so going. :) And I'm pretty sure I'm going to try to make it to Music Builds next month when it comes through town. And I'm pretty sure that's on a school night, too. :D

Me either, I've been having a blast lately at these concerts. Hawk Nelson last week, Dizmas this week. I also hung out with the singer from Dizmus for like an hour, omg he's just something else. Then it got even better cuz a big group of us went to Denny's. Came down to about six of us left there at 1:45 am. Just like the old days!

What concert are you going to see?

We had a discussion about Mosh Pits and stuff the other day in English Class. the teacher said that she doesn't think Mosh Pits are cool and that they just lead to people getting hurt.

Me and a couple other people looked at her and I said "its just one of those things that you HAVE to try once in your life... and then you're addicted."

She gave me the dirtiest look ever... :D

Well, you've got to expect to get bruises in a mosh pit. Even accidents are not totally out of the question. That's also why I strongly recommend people to dress accordingly. Heavy boots are a must for instance. Just... don't do crowd surfing, if you are wearing heavy boots! It's simply inconsiderate.

The only christian metal band I ever liked had one songs intro was the music from Scooby Doo and one of ther songs went something like: he was born in Bethlaham and raised a Nazerine. That's all I remember but I've always had a problem remembering their name. And one other thing I think a few people use to say they where the closest a christian band has ever gotten to sounding like Metallica. My slef I always thought they sounded more like Pantera. By the way I remembered a site that had a page where you could put in say Metallica and it would give christian metal bands to compair to metallica and found the bands name, it's Eternal Decision. Like I said I think they sound more like Pantera but thats just me.

It is not super extremely heavy or anything, but these bands here are the best of the best of Christian Metal:

1. TourniqueT http://www.tourniquet.net is their website. (Christian MegadetH / Christian TestAmenT)

2. SAVIOUR MACHINE (Chrisitan Gothic Opera Metal). Imagine Nightwish or Evanscence's music but just with male vocals, and all the lyrics to the songs talking about nothing but End Time Events in vivid details. http://www.saviourmachine.com is their website.

3. DeliverancE (Christian MetallicA / sometimes Christian sLaYeR depending on which song you are hearing from them).

4. early BRIDE - (Christian Motley Crue / Christian SKID ROW. They even have 1 song called "Goodbye" on the "Snakes in the Playground" CD from them that sounds EXACTLY like "Home Sweet Home" from Crue).

5. Barren Cross - (about the closest thing you are going to get to a Christian Iron Maiden, but I also hear a little bit of Hair Fluff in some of Barren Cross' songs too.

Absolutely NOTHING about Iron Maiden is Hair Fluff. Iron Maiden is not Hair Fluff, but a few songs from Barren Cross are).

6. Whitecross - (Christian RATT).

7. PETRA - (Christian JOURNEY. Just depends on what song you are listening to from them. "This Means War" CD, "On Fire!" CD, "Beyond Belief", "Unseen Power" CD from PETRA is nothing but JOURNEY through and through.

Even the song "He Came, He Saw, He Conquered" from PETRA on the "This Means War" CD sounds musically exactly just like "Be Good to yourself" song on the "Raised on Radio" CD from JOURNEY).

8. DivineFire - (Christian European Power Metal. I highly recommend them. Although you are not going to find their CDs in any musicstore. That is stuff you have to get off The Internet).

9. Seventh Avenue - (Christian European Power Metal from Germany. I highly recommend them too. Although just like DivineFire, you are not going to find their CDs in any musicstore. Thta is stuff you have to get off The Internet.

Christian version of Blind_GuardiaN, even though the guys in Blind_GuardiaN are Christians anyways, but all of Blind_GuardiaN's songs deal with J.R.R. Tolkien's books).

10. Jacobs Dream - (Christian Queensryche).

11. RecoN - (Christian Queensryche).

12. STRYPER. (STRYPER is STRYPER. Basically, Christian J. Priest more or less).

13. U2

14. early P.O.D.

15. Freedom Call (European Power Metal from Germany, that even though they don't come out and say they are a Christian Power Metal band, but you can tell they are by their songs and their lyrics. Christian through and through. I highly recommend their stuff. Christian version of Helloween

Freedom Call's song "We are One" on the "Eternity" CD from them sounds JUST LIKE "I Want Out" song on "Keeper of the 7 Keys part 2" CD from Helloween. You can't hardly tell the difference b/t the 2 songs other than the lyrics).

16. Balance of Power (Christian Progressive Metal band. Basically, the Christian version of Dream-TheateR).

17. Narnia (They are sort-of a Christian version of Yngwie J. Malmsteen. Christian European Classical Music Metal band).

18. Sacred Warrior (Christian Helloween. Helloween is the very first Power Metal band, and Sacred Warrior is the Christian version of that. Sacred Warrior was an 80's Christian Metal band).

19. Rob Rock (Christian average, standard, run of the mill Heavy Metal band).

20. SainT (All-out Christian version of J. Priest. This band almost is J. Priest. They look like them and they sound like them too, but with Gospel lyrics).

Definitely check out those bands. None of these bands are super heavy or anything, but it is awesome music with a clear cut life-changing Gospel message in it. Also, everyone one of these bands rock through the roof. Not a cheesy band in the list.

Iron Maiden being Death Metal?!!!!!!

Not likely. Iron Maiden are Heavy Hard Rock and borderline Power Metal.

In no way shape or form are Iron Maiden sounding like Death Metal.

You might want to rethink your musical categories.

Iron Maiden are not a heavy band at all, but they do plenty rock. Man, if you can listen to AC/DC, then you can listen to Iron Maiden.

(This is coming from an devoted Iron Maiden fan for 24 years straight).

Death Metal are bands like Obituary, Death, early Mortification, Paramecium, Living Sacrifice's 2nd CD.
