Kicks off the end of this month.
Who's your team? Who should we watch out for?
By the way, I got an email a week or so ago about a "Team Colors Day" on August 29th. That'd be the Friday before the first games. From what I read, this should be promoted on ESPN. But, the idea is obvious in the title there. Everybody wear your team colors on that Friday, the 29th.

GO BEAVS!!!
My Oregon State University Beavers have probably one of the toughest schedules around, but they have a very talented team, especially on the offensive side of the ball. With Sammie Stroughter back from injury, our crop of recievers(Stroughter, James Rodgers, & Darrell Catchings) will be very fast and experienced. With Lyle Moevao under center and new comer Ryan McCants, who people are saying runs like St. Louis Ram's Steven Jackson, we could put up a lot of points.
The only concern I have, besides the killer schedule, is replacing our entire front seven. We have some very experienced D-linemen coming in, but our LB core is lacking experience. Should be an interesting year for Beaver Nation.

Way to represent, PAC 10. Anyway, being a UCLA alum, it is tough for me to say this but the usc trojans are going to be pretty darn tough. Their "D" is probably the best they have ever had and that says something. The only question mark now is at QB since the starter went down but when you have the two top rated ones out of HS plus the fact you won't score against them, it won't matter.
As for my Bruins, well we have good coaches! But the sched is brutal:
Tennessee (18)
BYU (17)
Fresno St (25)
Oregon (20)
Arizona St (16)
USC (2)

After the season that my Irish had last year, just about anything will be an improvement. Though they won't contend for the national title, I can see them possibly cracking the top 20 by the end of the year and having at least a shot at a decent bowl game.
Offensively QB Jimmy Clausen had a great spring and has fully recovered from last years elbow issues; improvements on the offensive line and in the running game mean that he won't have to spend most of each game running for his life this year. And though they're very young the wideout spot might be the deepest position on the roster. (In fact, there is considerable depth at just about every position). On the defensive side we should see improvements across the board at all positions; the biggest change is actually the addition of former Georgia Tech defensive coordinator John Tenuta as the new linebackers coach, where he and defensive cooirdinator Corwin Brown are revamping the defensive approach to more of an attack mentality. The only real unknown right now is the kicking game.
The schedule is also nicer to Notre Dame this year; with three straight years of one of the best recruiting classes in the country the Irish are on the verge of building something big. We need another year to get all of the pieces operational, but a run at a BCS title is highly feasible by 2010. So saddle up, all of you Irish haters - we're reloading.........:D

But I know why you would include a reference to the SEC teams in such a post...
Florida won by the final score of 41-14, over Ohio State.
LSU won 38-24, over Ohio State.

I'm hereby taking it upon myself to create the first annual Dunce awards. The purpose of these awards is to provide recognition to those schools whose football program faithfully ignores the student part of the concept of student athlete; said proof of their ignorance coming in the officlal graduation rates of their players as reported to and released by the NCAA. The top 10 overall dunces coming into the 2008-2009 academic year:
Bottom 10 Football Grad Rates: Division I-A
San Jose State - 32%
Florida Atlantic - 33%
Arizona - 39%
Texas - 40%
Georgia - 41%
Central Florida - 42%
New Mexico - 43%
Cal - 44%
Alabama - 44%
Minnesota - 44%
UTEP - 44%
Note: San Jose State has been showing up on the "bottom 10" list every year, and finally has landed in the absolute bottom spot, with the worst football graduation rate in all of Division I-A. Last year, San Jose State also had the worst basketball graduation rate, so the Spartans have the sad distinction of having the worst grad rate in the nation in the two major sports in consecutive years. These numbers are also computed by the NCAA using the Graduation Success Rate formula, which means that outgoing transfers and droputs aren't included. These figures include only those student-athletes who remain at one school during their entire period of eligibility.
Special recognition also goes out to those schools who have the honor of having the biggest disparity between their football grad rate and the overall grad rate for the entire school. (Notice that there are several repeat offenders):
Biggest Difference in Grad Rates Between Football Players and All Students: Division I-A
Cal 44% - 86% -42%
Texas 40% - 73% -33%
Georgia 41% - 72% -31%
Virginia 63% - 92% -29%
UCLA 59% - 87% -28%
Michigan State 45% - 71% -26%
USC 55% - 80% -25%
Alabama 44% - 62% -18%
Arizona 39% - 56% -17%
Georgia Tech 55% - 71% -16%
Note: Division I-A football players as a group have an overall Graduation Success Rate that is about the same as the graduation rate for the general student body at Division I-A schools. However, there are a handful of schools where the football GSRs fall significantly below the overall graduation rates. You could think of this gap as one indication of the extent to which a school has compromised its normal academic standards for the sake of football. Year after year, the same schools show up on this list. This year, once again, Texas and Cal are right there at the top.
I would also like to give special recognition to Ohio State....er, excuse me, The Ohio State University - (gotta be politically correct here). This recognition is due to the Buckeyes having the dubious honor of managing to graduate 85% of their white football players, but only 32% of their African American players. As an Ohio State football player, if you're white, you're quite likely to leave with a degree. But if you're African American, however, you have less than a 1-in-3 probability of getting a degree.
Finally, to give recognition where recognition is due: the top 10 schools who manage to field a football team that actually has real students representing the school (here we go with that novel concept of student - athlete again):
Top 10 Football Grad Rates: Division I-A
Navy - 98%
Boston College - 96%
Notre Dame - 95%
Stanford - 94%
Wake Forest - 93%
Duke - 93%
Air Force - 93%
Vanderbilt -92%
Northwestern - 91%
Army - 90%
Oh, and one other category: the schools that best prepare their graduates to succeded financially award. Forbes magazine recently released their top 10 list of schools whose graduates earn the most money over the course of the graduates respective career. Among the superpowers of college football only Notre Dame made the list.
Hmmmm...I haven't been in much trouble on the boards lately. This one ought to land me in someones doghouse......:D

So...
Yesterday (Thursday), Baylor had our first game of the year. It seems that although Art Briles might have the ability to turn around teams given time, he is no miracle worker. 41-13, Wake Forest wins.
That said, the Baylor University Golden Wave Band (BUGWB) did an excellent job at both pregame and halftime, especially considering the relatively short amount of time we had to learn both shows. Though the "Baylor Line", aka punk freshmen, evaporated into the hot Texas air by the end of the 3rd quarter, BUGWB, as usual, remained to the end, standing and yelling the whole time. Top the game off with a rousing performance of Word Up and a lackluster performance of Tennessee Waltz, and we were done. And then we had class this morning. Whew! What a night!
Sic 'em, Bears!
(and in case you are still wondering, yes, marching band is the only reason I not only can tolerate, but actually like, Baylor's football games. :) )

Or, should we say... About that "way ahead of schedule" Alabama team.
I came into this season thinking 'Bama had another year of building on youth to go. Not so much. I had Auburn picked to handle the SEC West. Now, I'm not so sure 'Bama won't take it.
Games to look out for in the SEC:
Florida vs. Georgia
Alabama vs. Auburn
And what about ECU taking down VA Tech?!? I had heard that ECU would be a team to watch this year.

Hey Dan...
What's up with your boys man? Utah is good though. And I thought the Big Blue were gonna make a run for it there at the end.
Utah is a good team....but I'm not going to lie...they didn't look that good against Michigan. Michigan has some work to do...getting a punt off without a delay of game would be a start. I'd definitely like to see Threet start next game. I was much more impressed with him that Sheridan. The running game needs a TON of work. I've never really been impressed with Brandon Minor, and the other 2 are true freshman. Hopefully they can get it figured out soon.
The one bright spot for me was that their defense looked excellent in the 2nd half.

I agree.
Georgia should have won by much more, considering the hype. It was 45-21 over Ga. Southern.
While Stafford had a big play (61 yd TD to Kris Durham) his numbers were average. 13 of 21 for 275 yds. and 2 TDs. No INTs.
Moreno did well, but nothing special. only 59 yds. but he did have 3 TDs.
Georgia seemed to be spreading the running duties around. Caleb King ended up with 95 yards on 12 carries.
What I don't get about that, is how touted Moreno was coming into the season. But, knowing Richt, he's simply not wanting to show too much right now. Georgia has a tough schedule. They'll be in the hunt all year, provided they keep winning. I think they're probably happier not being #1, as it takes some pressure off of them.
Now, OSU. What was Tressel thinking keeping Wells in that game? He'll pay for it now. Wells is definitely out for the next game (which shouldn't be a big deal) and the bigger question comes up: What will his status be the following week, going into hostile territory against the Trojans? That'll be a game to watch, one that will surely shake up the Top 5.

No doubt.
Two years in a row for Vandy.
~~~~~
Vandy knocks out #24 S. Carolina for the second year in a row, 24-17. With S. Carolina racking up 100 more total yards, and Vandy only converting 2 of 10 3rd downs, three S. Carolina turnovers prove to be their undoing.
It's the Commodores' first upset of a ranked team in Vanderbilt Stadium since Sept. 19, 1992, a 31-9 win over then-No. 25 Mississippi.
The Commodores picked off two of Chris Smelley's passes and sacked him four times, recovered a punt that bounced off a South Carolina player and blocked a field goal. South Carolina's lone touchdown was due to Vanderbilt's only turnover, which the Gamecocks recovered at the Commodores 20 in the first quarter.
"Last year's was just as stunning, and it sort of irritated me that our players tried to say we weren't ready. We were ready to play, we just got our tails kicked. I'm sure those Vanderbilt players are wondering what kind of excuse the South Carolina guys have now. We don't have excuses, they just beat us," Spurrier said.
With 8 minutes left in this game I'm watching, I have one thing to say:
The Ohio State University should not be number three in the country. If they pull this nonsense next week, they won't be. USC will embarrass them soundly.
Yeah, sure, Wells is out. Excuses, excuses. OSU didn't stat playing this game until the start of the 4th quarter.
Michigan still didn't play like a top 10 team, but did look better than last week. They started out looking a million times better than last week, but then kind of fell apart. I do wish Rodriguez would've just stuck with Steven Threet...switching up the QBs like that kind of messes with the rhythm. Threet really showed some running skills that no one knew about before. True freshman RB Sam McGuffie looked like the next great RB to come through Michigan...he had a great game today. The defense still looked decent, and looked good by the scoreboard, but Miami made some pretty big mistakes a couple times that could have really opened up the game.
Our rivalry of the year is next week: Iowa vs. Iowa State.
Where is a video of the Jake Locker unsportsmanlike penalty after scoring for Washington with a couple seconds left against BYU? Not on YouTube please - I've looked EVERYWHERE and cannot find it. So he tosses the ball in the air, or tosses the ball "high in the air" as the rule as written, the result is a blocked 35-yard PAT.
ECU...
The talk of all towns right now.
Skip Holtz has a team down there. And, let's be honest, last week, after beating VA Tech, they were put at #26 or 27, depending on who you ask.
Now, they've dominated the number 9 team in the country. Consider Alabama. 'Bama was #23 when they beat Clemson, then #9. If ECU doesn't jump up to somewhere around 15-17 I'll be surprised. I know one thing, I'm not picking against them again.
~~~~~
OSU, and Michigan are disappointing. But, Florida struggled early with Miami.
One thing to keep in mind about the polls, is that many of the votes are purely based on scores alone. You can't expect every voter to watch every game. That's just the way of it.
~~~~~
I thought the penalty in the BYU/Wash. game was dumb. Rules are rules, and that one is clear. But I think they've put some in place now that take away from the sheer emotion of a game like that.
I have to agree with the consensus: Let the game be decided by the players and coaches, not by the refs.
Really pleased with the performance of my Irish today. While Michigan helped them with 6 turnovers, several of those were forced by aggresive play, and the victory was the result of a complete effort from the offense, defense, and special teams. Clausen looked much improved over last week, and an offensive line that was very inefficient last season hasn't allowed a sack in two games. While I don't think they're a top 25 team yet, I think they have an excellent chance to become one by the end of the year. They have a very favorable home schedule, and apart from closing the season at USC I don't see any other games that look like an automatic loss. I believe this team is finally starting to come together. Cheer, cheer for old.........:D
Buck teeth and big tails rule the day, and ruin the day for USC.
(1) USC 21 - OSU 27
OSU came out ready to play. They played a very consistent game, and had USC on their heels the whole first half. Freshman running back, Quizz Rodgers, was amazing. At one point, he was pulling at least 9 yards every time he touched the ball. He ended up with 186 yards on 37 attempts, and 2 touchdowns. Not bad for a freshman, and his O-line, against what was called one of the top defenses, and was called the top linebacking core in all of college football.
It was the Rodgers brothers who put this one away offensively, with two touchdowns apiece. James Rodgers had 6 catches for 36 yards, but two of those were for touchdowns, including a well played tipped-ball touchdown at the end of the first half that sent USC to the locker room down 21-0.
Mark Sanchez's lone interception in the fourth proved to be the deal-sealing slip for the USC quarterback. Add that to two other fumbles, one of which was a turnover, and it's easy to see how OSU controlled the ball for nearly 10 minutes longer overall.
I for one am happy to see USC get knocked out. Great team, always is, but I get tired of the "cemented into number one" thing that happens with them every year. America, it's time for a change.
Now, I'll be keeping a very close eye to see if:
1. Oklahoma can manage a big win against TCU.
2. The game of the week, (8)Alabama vs. (3)Georgia.
In my opinion, if Georgia wins their game against Alabama, they will find themselves back in the number one spot, having earned it this time. (That's very difficult for me to say, as a Gators fan.)
Hey Les, how about those Beavers! :D
I tell ya, we are stoked here in Corvallis about our Beavers. As a team, they always start off a little slow, but they always seem to win a HUGE game to turn the season around(USC in 06 & Cal in 07). Mike Riley had this team ready to play and they didn't back down to USC. It's a great day for Beaver Nation!
I'm not really a big football fan, but its nice to see the Minnesota Gophers ranked again. They will be moving to their own stadium, on campus, next fall. The Vikes will share the stadium while their new stadium is built and the Metrodome will be history. I'd like to be the one that throws the switch to implode that monstrosity. It is not a good venue for any sport.
I'm not really a big football fan, but its nice to see the Minnesota Gophers ranked again. They will be moving to their own stadium, on campus, next fall. The Vikes will share the stadium while their new stadium is built and the Metrodome will be history. I'd like to be the one that throws the switch to implode that monstrosity. It is not a good venue for any sport.I lived in Mineapolis for 5 years and went to a lot of games in the Dome. It always struck me as a sterile environment with no personality. Besides, everytime I was in the building I felt like I'd been swallowed by the Michelin Tire man.......:D
Wow... Texas Tech just had an EPIC win against UT. Freakin' amazing.
Also amazing: Baylor lost by only three points to the #14 team in the nation today. We were fighting until the last 1:20... when Mizzou got the ball and started kneeling. It was the most electrifying Baylor game of which I have ever been a part.
Robert Griffin III, BU's QB, completed 209 passes without an interception from the beginning of the season (and his college career) until today. Unfortunately, that interception was what gave Mizzou the ball back at 1:20. :-/ He was 8 passes (I believe) from breaking the Big XII record for consecutive passes without an interception.
Now that Michigan is officially not going to continue the longest bowl streak in college football, I just wish for two things:
1) To see the team actually play an entire game, instead of just one half like they've been doing.
2) To beat Ohio State any way they can, even if it's ugly. :P
6 Oklahoma - WON (@ TX A&M 66-28)
7 USC - WON (Cal 17-3)
8 Oklahoma State - LOST (@ #2 TX Teach 56-20)
9 Boise State -WON (Utah State 49-14)
10 Utah - WON (#11 TCU 13-10)
3 Florida 8-1 [4]
4 Texas 9-1 [5]
5 Oklahoma 9-1 [5]
8 Boise State 9-0 [9]
9 Utah - 10-0 [10]
10 Ohio State 8-2 [12] WON (@ Northwestern 45-10)
Penn State dropping four just like TX did last week. More? Boise State and Utah up one and the Nittany Lions down six to nine? Less? Leave OK and USC alone and put them at five?
Out of top ten - Oklahoma State (8-2)
VERY slim shot at BCS?
13. Missouri 8-2 who had no problem with KS
14. Georgia 8-2 who barely beat Kentucky
I don't think they are in the picture but what can happen in two weeks is anybody's guess.
I think that it will be Florida and Oklahoma in the National Title game.
But here is the crap thing about this mess of a season. If Oklahoma beats Texas Tech then the Big 12 south will have 3 teams at 11-1 and tied for the conference lead. TT beat Texas, Texas beat OU, and presumably OU will beat TT. The tie breaker to see who plays in the Big 12 title game is the BCS standings. OU may jump Texas if they beat TT and Oklahoma St.
Needless to say, not only do we need a playoff to sort this mess out on a national level, but the Big 12 South is so loaded they need a playoff to pick a true winner. Of course, all this can be averted if Texas Tech wins out.
On a SEC note, Bama has beaten an overrated georgia and an overrated clemson. Florida will throttle them.
1 Alabama - beat Miss State 32-7
2 Texas Tech - idle - plays #5 OK next week
3 Florida - beat #25 South Car 56-6
4 Texas - beat KS 35-7
5 Oklahoma - idle - plays #2 TX Tech next week
6 USC - beat Stanford 45-23
7 Penn State - beat IN 34-7
8 Utah - beat San Diego St 63-14 (sounds like the Grinnell basketball team that scores at least 63, if not more, per half)
9 Boise State - beat ID 45-10
10 Ohio State - beat IL 30-20 while giving up 192 yards rushing to QB Juice Williams
Do the AP change the rankings around today?
NOPE.
Utah & Penn State
GA and Ohio State.
The Bowl Championship Series will move to ESPN beginning with the 2011 games.
Under a new four-year contract between ESPN and the BCS, the cable network will broadcast the Fiesta, Orange and Sugar Bowls from 2011-2014.
ESPN also will carry the BCS national championship game in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The Rose Bowl - which has a separate TV contract with ABC - will host the championship game in 2014.
5 USC .808
6 Utah .784
7 Texas Tech .781
And remember AL plays FL and OK plays MO. Perhaps TX can get up there to #2. I don't see any scenario for USC.
I'm irritated that OU is playing Mizzou in the B12 Championship. I believe UT should have gone in. But, there was a 3-way tie for 1st in B12 South, and after 5 attempted tie-breakers, they looked at the BCS standings. Friggin' Oklahoma is in. And if Mizzou plays anything like they did against the Beakers, we're slaughtered just like last year. :rolleyes:
Pete Carroll has forfeited two timeouts, one in each half, in order to have his team wear home colors (red jerseys) against UCLA.
Tradition is cool. I guess it will be "visually impressive" and all...
Yeah, I guess our Bears should've done their job and beat Tech. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as an "almost win." Except for when there was an "overtime loss" category in the NHL. Otherwise, no.
I wouldn't fib to ya bro. ;)
Gotta wonder if just because this is being made a big deal of, that Murphy's Law will strike, and USC will regret not having those timeouts. Or, at least one of them.
I doubt it though.
If Percy Harvin is not at 100%, and Alabama can establish the run, then I believe we win. If we lose, there's no one I'd rather lose to than Urban Meyer and Florida. They have a great program and great coach.
Well, there it is. OU v. Florida.
I'm riding the Tim Tebow bandwagon. He seems too good of a person to be true! I believe God has given him his amazing abilities to help serve his higher purpose, and he's doing it well. :)
That, and I can't bring myself to cheer on OU. But mostly because of the first reason. ;)
