We received some great entries for our animals photo contest. Below are the twenty-one submissions. Since there's twenty-one (!), be sure to check the second page if you don't see all twenty-one on the first page. Vote for your favorite. The poll will close in three days and the winner announced.

The winner of this photography contest will receive a prize and also be entered in a drawing for a special prize at the conclusion of all the photography contests. The special grand prize is a sealed cassette of Third Day's independent album Contagious and the winner's choice of an art print from Jason's artwork at:

Vote Now!

(note: To be totally fair, the order of submissions in the poll is random based on a randomization algorithm found here: http://www.randomizer.org/form.htm )

Insects certainly are animals. They are classified under the Kingdom anamalia in biological classification.

I voted for someone else, I'd find it really odd to vote for my own.

Why not? Unless you find that you think one of the others that was submitted was better than yours (and with all the good photos, it's really been close several times, I've really been tempted to NOT vote for my own), in which case, by all means, vote for theirs. But if you still think yours is the best, I see nothing wrong with voting for your own. :)

In some cases, like in THIS contest, the only vote you get might actually be your own. *sniffle* :( ;) Shows how much the boyfriend, and my boss, and my coworker, AND my mother know! LOL. I was torn between two, and apparently listened to the wrong opinions and entered the wrong one. :o

Oh well. Moving right along. :) What's the next category and when does it start?

Yup....I am glad I voted for my own this time around....so far it's the one and only vote I got:P . I think I chose the wrong picture too. You never know though.....last year I submitted a picture that I really liked of a stray cat....and no votes other than my own. Such sadness. There were so many good photos this time that even the leaders (as of this writing) only have four votes. The votes are fairly evenly distributed.

Mr.Elwood
07-25-2008, 02:57 AM
My personal criteria are:

Physical characteristics: Crisp clear solid picture.
Originality: Live unplanned shots are the best - Slightly staged is ok (take your time and stalk you shot without disturbing the subject or nature) - Completely prompted and setup automatically gets ignore (unless that is what the request is: i.e. arranging a fruit bowl).
Shot: good angle and good use of lighting,subject..colors. .
and then I filter down from there...

I did these last time around... and now this time; I clearly have a decidedly different idea of what is and is not a quality shot (to me). I doubt I'll continue on here since it's basically a waste of time. We don't see it the same way and obviously that is my problem and not even else's... ya know what I mean?

Sour grapes?? possibly... but like my family likes to says: "If everyone you know is a jerk, and you're the only normal one?? what's the common denominator ya jerk!" Meaning: If I never see what y'all see, than it is me who can't see straight and not y'all.

I totally understand the artistic qualities of where you're coming from! I try for composition, lighting, contrast.. if the photo needs to be straightened or cropped later when you're critiqueing it, do it! With the technology today and the great little digital cameras, just about anyone can point and shoot and get a nice photo... but there is definitely more to a great piece of photography than that. Could be some photos are getting votes from friends or family members that know who took the photo and not really "judged" as they should be. Don't stop entering, Mr. E! I don't know which one is yours, but I see a few that are really artfully done and one of them is surely yours!

Then why enter?? Just create a thread and share your pictures..
Maybe you enter because you want to see if others 'see' what you see in the pictures you take.. and you just happen to think this is a good way to find out.

I'm just guessing..

Here's an example.. You think you can sing and play the guitar right? Well what if one day you finally realize people were just being polite and you stink. You wouldn't be hurt as much as wondering why

A.) no one said anything
B.) all this time I thought I sounded fine??? sheesh.. maybe I need to find something else to do..

see what I mean....

I don't think you can compare the two, not without knowing what the criteria each voter is using to make his/her decision.

Some people here will vote for their own photo - that is a no-brainer. Others will vote based on how "cute" they think the photo is. Others will vote on the "technical" aspect of the photo. While still others will vote based on a "feeling" that the photo will provoke in them.

So - without knowing the criteria, I would say that it would be perfectly OK to label All of the photos submitted as "great photos".

Kasie_89

I'll unashamedly admit that I did indeed vote for my own photo.
The only reason I voted for it was because it is the only picture that I own my pet (who was run over by a car), and it makes me happy every time that I look at it. :)
So, now you know.

Somehow I thought that Elwood was probably the spider given the comments made about what constitutes a good photo vs a photo that gets the votes (as well as his opening comment that what he submitted was cute, furry, and cuddly. Coming from Rob, I figured that meant it was probably just the opposite. :P )

But yeah, I'm kind of the same way that way. I went back and forth for a whole week, and polled a bunch of non-boardies about whether to post my fly picture (which was technically sound, but would most likely suffer from the "ick factor") or my other choice, which also rated very highly among my poll-ees. It was essentially a split vote, with the idea that the fly pic was good, but if I wanted any votes other than my own, I'd be better off submitting the other one.

But I wanted to test my "ick factor" theory one more time, and now know, after losing with both a nice sharp macro of a furry caterpillar AND a really detailed macro of a fly, to NOT submit bug pictures, no matter how cool I think it may be.

One of my coworkers said that I should submit the fly with a happy face or a party hat on it to lighten it up a little. I don't know, do you think it would have helped? :P

I don't know if its the ick factor alone, necessarily. To me, it seems as though people voting in the animals contest usual vote more for a "cute" photo, or an action photo, more than a technical shot.

Yes, it would have helped IF cute is what you wanted to go for. Photo contests should be judged on technical qualities not cuteness (unless it's also a technically sound photo and cute is what you like), IMHO.

I had mine narrowed down to a cute little pair of otters (nice technically, but lacking in color contrast between the fur, water, and rocks), a close up of a gorilla's face (very sharp, but really intimidating), a bright pink preening flamingo (artful composition), or the lion chuffing (which I ended up choosing since it had more of all of the above... except I'd say he was more handsome than cute).

Maybe the cute little otters would have been the more popular choice, but I'm still happy I submitted my chuffing lion :) . Looking forward to more of Jason's contests regardless of how others choose to judge or vote.

And ditto congrats to both Sharon and Caninemom!

Alas, nothing cute about a dead fly. :D Which I figured going in. I was actually surprised that I got a vote that wasn't MINE. Anyone want to fess up? :)

Good choice in my book. Had I not entered anything myself, I actually would have voted for yours. And I'm not lion. ;) (And when I pointed my sister - who also is into photography - to this thread so she could see what "Jeff Goldblum" was up against, she picked yours too, actually.)

And yeah, I love to enter these photo contests, win or lose. Winning is NICE, yeah, but it's not the only reason I enter. Alas, I may have to skip the next one. I've got hard drives full of flowers and scenery and critters, but not a lot of people shots that would come CLOSE to even getting MY vote on here. I'll look though. :)

Not me...I voted for my horse...and that was the only one I got. I went with the horse, because I remember last year, the winner was a polar bear leaping into the water, even though it wasn't the most technical shot there, so I figured people liked action too, since I didn't have any "cute." :P

Yep, I liked that shot too. If I wouldn't have voted for my own, I probably would've gone with the spider though.

Yeah, I enjoy them too, even if the only vote I get is my own. It is pretty interesting to see how people vote though. I remeber last year, my people photo, I thought may have been good enough to win, but I was the only one who voted for it, but on another contest I just submitted one, just for the sake of being in the contest, and didn't expect any votes and got 3 or 4 of them. :P Different strokes for different folks, I guess. :) I'll have to look through my photos for a people photo though....maybe I'll submit the other one that I was trying to decide between last year. The problem with my people photos are that the good ones have a lot of meaning behind them, but they're from a mission trip, so mostly I'm the only one who sees the meaning behind them. :P

People have varying opinions on what makes a good photo. One of the biggest ones is, "Does it speak to me?" They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I think the reason why so many people voted for caninemom's photo, for example, is that it spoke clearly of the love between two dog pals.

Another thing with the technical side of this....how techical and amazing a picture can one submit when it is limited to 100kb? Kinda takes the tech out of it doesn't it?

Hey, now. I literally wowed people with my less than 100kb fly picture (once they got over the initial "Ewww" that is). It wasn't QUITE as "wow-nderful" as it was at it's full 8mp size (actually it was kind of scary at its full 8mp. Picture if you will, a fly that's BIGGER than your computer monitor. Jeff Goldblum indeed! "Hellllllp meeeeee!" :D ), but the detail came through just fine even at less than 100kb. You could still even see the hair on the legs of Elwood's spider in HIS pic. (Couldn't vote for his pic, though, I'm an arachnophobe and it goes against my phobia to vote for a spider. ;) )

Actually, I'm amazed at how good all these pictures actually DO look at this resolution, particularly the landscapes.

Andi, you actually said it best several pages back. Different people look for different things in what makes them post or vote for a pic. It just works out that Barb and Rob and I seem to think more "technical" than a lot of folks. And for future contests I know I'll be weighing in whether I want to enter a pic that I like and risk not getting votes, like this time, or that I think other people will like to try and get more votes. Assuming I can't find one that fits in both categories.

Although with "people", I know I'm going to have trouble finding one that fits in EITHER category. :(

Jason, can I glue Jeff Goldblum's head on my fly and re-enter it in the people category? ;) LOL.

Actually, serious question this time, if I entered one last year that didn't win, I can try to re-enter it THIS year if I really think it's my best one for the category, right?

You're right, Jason. These contests here are really more about voting for something you like and what moves you than what aspects of a photo would normally be judged if it were about professionals. I think we're getting some pretty amazing pics at just 100kb though, so I can only imagine how beautiful the original sizes are!

I don't know about the love between the dogs in caninemom's photo though... I think they're watching a scary movie and the little guy just needs some big guy security... although the big guy looks quite worried himself! :P It really is a cute picture.

I, just now, "got" the Jeff Goldblum reference....lol

I liked the fly, I don't know why I liked the fly - I guess I'll die. Where is that pesky spider that wiggled and jiggled and tickled insider her?!?!

I am still trying to figure out how to shrink my pics without totally distorting them. Ugh - it makes me crazy!

Now people pics - good gosh - I have THOUSANDS to choose from. This will take some doing I suppose, finding the best (that I think at least) out of all of them to submit.

And I think I said before - One man's trash is another man's treasure. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. :P

Seriously? Even if it lost in a previous contest?

I thought I was just confirming that something was okay, glad I asked then. :)

Yep, may have to sit this one out then.

Actually, when I sent that pic to Jason, I think I actually CALLED it "jeffgoldblum.jpg" :P

Love that movie.

Seriously. Because some people may remember it as yours, taking out the anonymous factor.

No problemo! :)

Although I just read the People Pics thread, and there isn't anything in the rules about it one way or the other, you might want to add that on there someplace.

I'm probably the only dork who would want to submit a losing photo a second time anyway... ;)

Guess that rules out the fly with Jeff's head on it too, then. :D

Hi everyone. Actually Clancy (who is the big pup and who is a girl and she is a Rhodesian Ridgegack) and Wishbone, (the small pup who is a boy who is part Min Pin and part Dachsund) DO love each other a lot. Clancy is still somewhat of a baby so she looks to Wishbone who is going to be 12 here in a few days for guidance. She always follows him and wants to be near him and gives him "kisses." She is ALWAYS quite wrinkled too. They lay like in the photo ALL the time. I just happened to get lucky one day as I am NOT a photographer. They get on top of Clancy's crate and look out the window together which is what they were doing the day the photo was taken. I must say it was such an honor to have my pic considered with all the amazing talent in the contest. Thank you all so much for appreciating my photo. I really truly believe they were ALL WINNERS, the pic of the fly included !!! :P

I totally missed this one somehow, and I was looking forward to it, too.

I have some amazing beetle shots for next year. LOL
