I am looking to buy a DVD Box set off ebay but the problem is that it is REGION 1. Since here in Australia we run on REGION 4 I have tracked down a code to multi-region my DVD player. Now, the company website states that you cannot multi-region any of their DVD players. So my question is, if I use this multi- region code could it do any damage to my DVD player?

Secondly, since REGION 1 runs off NTSC and REGION 4 on PAL will that mean I can watch my DVDs as I normally do? Apparently it does play NTSC:

I have many non region 1 dvd's. multi-region codes will not affect your dvd player.

I'd say verify first of all that your player is not multi region before you do anything to it. A lot of players around now ARE actually multi region (or Region zero) and will play anything. Does your manual specifically say that it is only for region 4 playback? The fact that it says it WILL play NTSC discs is a positive sign that it may play Region 1 discs already, although keep in mind that Japan is also NTSC, and they're actually Region 2.

Regarding changing your player to be multi-region, if it's not already, with that code. I tend to err on the side of caution with stuff like this. I fried my first router when I tried to do a perfectly legitimate from their website upgrade of the firmware, and had to trade it in for a new one, which to this day remains with its original firmware.

Because of that, even though there is a firmware update for my Hitatchi HD DVD player (that we've actually used with no problems to update the three office Hitachi players we have at work), I still won't run it on the one here at the house. It seems to take a little longer to boot up than the ones at work, but other than that, my motto tends to be "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

It may be fine to hack your player to be multi region, but at the very least, I'm sure doing something like that will void your warranty. And keeping in mind that even legitimate updates can screw up your hardware, like with my router, I'd think very hard and make sure that you really want to risk your machine by doing something like that.

Now, if it's something that's as simple as plugging in a new code with your remote, and something that you can switch back to the way you had it if it doesn't work, if you need to do it, then something like that would be fine, I'd think. But I'd definitely think twice before doing something that actually permanently alters your firmware.

Just my thoughts on the subject. But I drive a Prius, what do I know. ;) :P
