Okay, so I downloaded a few cool fonts onto my computer, but I don't know how to actualy use them in wordperfect9 or wordpad or anything, b/c it's not coming up in my fonts, and when I open the file of it that I downloaded, all it has is it's properties, and shows me an example of what it looks like.
Anyone know how to make it work?
Thankx!

You have to copy the font files to you Fonts folder. It should be under something like C:\Windows\Fonts. If you put the font files into that folder, it should show up in whatever program you use, just like any other font that came with your computer. If you can't find the folder, a search should bring it up.

Another way to do it is to go to Control Panel, where you see the Fonts folder. When you open that folder, it's best to not just drag the font file(s) over, but to select File | Install, and then select the font from wherever you have it on your hard drive.

This was necessary on older versions of Windows, but newer versions will automatically install when you drag the file over.

One more thing: if you download a font, chances are that others will not have the same font. Therefore, if you print the document you are working on, no problem. But if you share that document, say you email it to someone, and they don't have that font installed, it won't look the same.

I will add to James' note that having too many fonts can slow your system down, and that after installing a new font you will likely need to restart any open applications before the fonts will appear as formatting options.

Typically the fonts folder is C:\windows\fonts (windows NT and 2000 users will find it under C:\winnt\fonts I believe... as will those who upgraded from those OSes). As James said, it's best to use the install utility.

Thanks. That's huge, and I forgot to mention it. It especially causes applications which use fonts (such as Word) to take forever to start up.

What many don't realize is that it can cause Windows to be slower on start-up.
