...I was recently looking on Facebook and noticed how some people never type in full.
The group or whatever ,was entitled;
'I often stand and stare inside the fridge for no apparent reason'.
This was some girls response (which took me a while to decipher.):-

I hate it!!! I think it's just an excuse for poor spelling and the dumbing down of society (*steps off soap box*)
There are certain abbreviations I use (LOL, ROFL, IMHO etc) but I refuse to purposely misspell just so I can get more words in. Instead of jamming in more words, learn to just get to the point. :P

Yep, and besides, it must take longer to type that way surely! Our brains, or at least mine, is wired to be able to type quickly with the correct spelling - I would have to learn to spell that way before it would speed up anything.
It's just stupid in my opinion - was she english Emily? It sounds like a really bad cockney accent!

Cheeky cheeky!! I really have no idea where she was from. I may have to agree with you - it does seem a bit cockney.

*shouts to the rafters, loud enough for it to echo*
YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!
:P
It's fine for when you're trying to squeeze in as much info as you can into a wee text message screen on your phone or something, but when you're posting on a public message board or something like that, it really should be in properly spelled English. I've lost track of how many posts that are full of text message abbreviations that I won't take the time to translate and will just plain skip them all together.
IMHO (yes, that's one of the common ones that like Sharon, I WILL use :) ), if you've got something to say, have enough respect for your own words, give them the time they deserve, and spell them out properly.

I agree with Emmo and Karen....chatspeak (no matter where it is) annoys the **** (edits/asteriks are mine--it's Friday and I'm cranky/not woken up yet) outta me. If you're gonna say something, at least have the decency to spell it out...sheesh!!

What's really funny is that I frequently have to text message my boss, when he's out shooting a deposition and I need to get up with him, that's the easiest way to get a hold of him.
Even when I text message him, I tend to spell everything out fully, I just can't bring myself to use all those wonky abbreviations. Fortunately his phone is set for unlimited texting, otherwise I'd probably cost him a fortune each time I had a question for him. :D

Well, maybe it IS true that all things come full circle and we're beginning to revert back to middle English where we just spell things the way they sound.
:D
Or maybe some folks just need Hooked oh Phonics! Hey Tracey, since you're not using your copy...:P

I had a few cousins who had to go to rehab because they got hooked on phonics
I hate it when people do it that drastically. I don't mind using a few substitutes. like ur for your and stuff like that. I used to do nothing but shorthand but it doesnt look good at all. When I text I use a lot of shorthand but I think that is a whole lot more acceptable then this.

I am not saying I don't use text speak when sending a text. Like 2morra, lata, f3, luv, supa and so on.I just can't bare to see it in an email or on a forum. It REALLY annoys me!!

I can't stand text speak. I have to write out full sentences. None of this "can u meet me 2nite?" crap. It's so uncouth.

It probably is, Col. :D I can use 'u' and '2', but that's about my limit. Besides, I sometimes communicate with teachers who write and spell well.

Huh? That one IS a bit of a stretch, I think. f + three - th = free? Or is the 3 stand for something else, like when someone says they "heart" someone else and shorten it to <3
THIS is why I never use the text message feature on my phone, I'm too easily confused. :P Well, that and I'm too cheap to pay for every letter, or character, or every text that I send, however they bill me for it if I use it. I actually have no idea HOW they charge for it, since I never use it. It's like my credit card, someone asked me once what my percentage rate was on it, and I had no idea. I pay it off every month so never deal with finance charges...
Anyway, now that I've gone off on THAT tangent, as you were folks. :o :)

OK. I shall try and clear up the f3 business. A lot of people in the UK find making the 'th' sound difficult. So saying the number three would come out like free. Not very good, granted. But that is how f3 comes about in text speak. Meaning free in text, not three.
Is that any clearer, or is it still as clear as mud??

They must be from a non-English speaking background, as many other languages don't have the voiceless 'th' as in think.

Ahhhh, actually I get it. We actually get that a little here in North Carolina (and probably other places in the US as well), particularly on the word "bathroom" which comes out "baff-room". I just assumed it was a southern thing, like calling a chimney a chimbley. Guess it's all over, not just here.

It probably happens in many places, Karen.
English speaking people often don't hear the difference between the two 'th' sounds, as they are written the same way ie voiceless 'th' as in think, thin and the voiced 'th' as in this, that, these etc. However, the sound 'f' for fish is quite different, and I have no idea how people could confuse 'f' and 'th'.
Can you tell that I'm an ESL teacher? :P
