Would it be "illegal" for me and a few other people to play the song "Revelation" off Third Day's new album of the same name at our church BEFORE the albums release date of July 29th???

I'm not sure. Check with www.musicservices.org. Their FAQ page should be helpful.

Well, I would check into that but we decided to play it anyway. I look at it this way, technically it would be illegal to play any song without the expressed written consent of the artist, so why not break out this incredible new Third Day song? I really dont think the guys would care anyway, its not like we are playing the entire cd, or that we sound anything like Third Day. Now saying that I know how to play rythm and lead guitar to all but 2 of the songs on the cd lol. Those songs would be Caught Up In Yourself and Ready. If anyone has the tabs and chords to those two they would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, you played it? I thought you meant you were playing the streaming CD from your computer. That's different.

Technically, it's not illegal at all to perform music for religious services in a building set aside for that purpose. You do get into issues when you display or hand out lyrics, or when you perform music in a public place other than for a religious purpose.

depends where u live too, u need a sheetmusic copyright licence to play a song in a church if you dont own a copy of the sheetmusic..to my understanding yes that includes even if u play it by ear! gotta love Australian Copyright laws ;)

Well, I do play by ear, and I'll go ahead and admit to typing out the lyrics with the chord progressions above the words and then handing that to the two guys I play with. I dont believe we are actually going to hand out or display the lyrics during service, I just think this song is one of those songs you sing to bring people to worship, like a lead in to the sing alongs lol. Hopefully Mac and the guys wont be too mad, I think we do it justice, totally awesome song :D
