It means it is time to get an MP3 player  !
I feel for you; I remember when my 8 Track player started doing the same thing, and I had to finally get a tape player. :D

(ps): On a more serious note, the laser lens might need cleaning, the laser might have gone bad, or the tracks that move the laser back and forth to read the CD could need cleaning. Also, sometimes the loading mechanism doesn't load the CD properly, or the motor that spins the CD burns out. There are lots of things it could be, especially if it is older.
Things to try:
I would try a new, manufactured CD (not a CD-R you recorded) and see how it works.
You can run a "cleaner" CD in it (looks like a CD but with little fluffy things stuck all over it) and see if it helps.
There might be a way to reset the circuitry, but I wouldn't know since I don't know the make, model, year, etc. Sometimes just disconnecting it from all power sources will reset circuitry, like by pulling the positive terminal off of your car battery for a few seconds and replacing it again.
If you were me, you would try resetting the circuitry, and if that didn't work, you would yank it out of the dash, take it apart, clean the tracks and laser lens with denatured alcohol and a cotton swab, put it back together, reinstall it -- and see if it works any better.
Or, you can always spend money and have a repair person take a look at it. :D

Do you still have the manual for it? Maybe in the troubleshooting section they have a list of error codes, it might tell you exactly what "error 1" means. Of course, if it's anything like the codes our DVD burners give us here in the office, sometimes the explanation is more confusing than the code!
Or look up the make and model of the player online, and see if THEY list error codes on their website.
It means it is time to get an MP3 player.
I second that! Best extra I ever had added to my car. Burn one mp3 CD and you don't have to mess with it again for another 10-11 hours.

You should look and see if there's a reset button and push it. Works every time.

Cassette? What's THAT?!?
1. Ask my wife as I've got two of those old Napa Valley cases that holds 32 apiece.
2. The trolley/bus I rode today had one.
3. It is right below the cd player in our 2000 Grand Caravan.
4. See picture.

one CD plays 10-11 hours of music?

One MP3 CD, yeah. It's great for long road trips. Pop in one mp3 CD before you go, and you don't have to touch it for the rest of the trip. :)

Basically the MP3 files from your computer are simply saved onto the CD instead of burned as a track on the CD, which allows a lot more to be stored on the CD. The downside is that not all CD players can play them.

Exactly.
I had Best Buy pull out my old cassette deck (see, I remember cassettes too! ;) ) in my old Escort and replace it with an mp3 deck. And liked the convenience so much that I made sure when I bought the Prius last year, that I had one with an mp3 deck preinstalled by the factory. You just can't beat not having to swap out CDs all the time. I love it.

I've thought about doing the same thing, since my cassette player broke(I had a cassette adapter so I could play my mp3 player through that)....but, I'm not sure how long the Olds will last me, so I decided not to. :P

I had an 8track player when I was a kid. I was a kid in the 90's. Does this make sense?
