View Full Version : Very unpopular thing to say

As a music fan, I value a great singing voice and great songwriting above all else. I'm not impressed if someone puts on a great show. So that makes me a bit of a music snob, and I'm very aware of how I come across.

So I have been reading a lot about how many critics, as well as other artists, are enamored of one Taylor Swift, and I am here to say it once and for all: She can't sing, and her songs are very weak.

I'm not sure why everyone is so enamored of her. I guess it's that she could write songs as a teenager, and she's pretty good looking. But her songs, while better than most written by teens, aren't good when compared to the general population of recorded songs. And her looks...music is for listening to, not looking at.

Anyway, she was on an awards show the other night. In the interest of "putting on a show", she starts out with a ridiculous get-up that makes you think she secretly wants to be a rapper or something. But if you close your eyes and listen, and don't look, she truly cannot carry a note.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=l7hIbbas96E&feature=bz302

OK, let's get this out of the way:

1. If you are a Taylor Swift fan, I am not insulting you as a person. Or her. She can still sing better than I can. Then again, I'm a better programmer than she is.

2. I know I'm coming across as a negative, party-pooping, grumpy old man. No need to point that out.

I'm not a fan of hers (or country music in general), but I think she can sing, just not live. Her songs actually aren't half bad. I wouldn't listen to them on a daily basis, but they're tolerable.

Now, if you really want to talk about someone who can't sing, try Miley Cyrus. Serioulsy, the girl makes me long for the sweet voice of William Hung.

She's very good looking but....that's as far as is goes. Darn NashVega$ is centered too much on looks and not pure talent nowadays.

She sang the National Anthem at a recent NASCAR race. I almost cried and not because it was beautifully done either.

I was completely shocked by the whole rain shower thing. Do we all not think of flashdance when we see that? It conjers up erotic thoughts to me, and I'm not sure how old this girl is. If she's 18, I guess it's not creepy if she's ok with it. But I thought it was a cheap way to get attention, and if she sang better she would not have to make sure her dress was soaked to get the unbelievable response from the audience. The crowd literally went wild. Why not, there was a barely legal, if that, very attractive girl standing in a soaking wet dress?

Of course, I never sound good singing Celine! Her voice is far too amazing for me to do her songs any justice.

Meh.... another teen put in the spotlight so the audience can drool... Isn't it something like 5 teens per year that the music industry pumps out for attention deficit audiences?

I will say this though, I'm careful not to criticize live performances anymore because they're human. By that, I mean they can get sick or their voice can screw up form one hour to the next. If they're consistently like that however, then that's a different story.

Now Brandi Carlile (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xq-ZmAYLeB8)(YouToob), she's quite the live (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mF9XAs5Dmo) performer! She even does a desent Johnny Cash cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlXiRnx_0Bg) (YouTube!)

I do not like Taylor Swift as an artist. She sounds like a whiny little 14 yr. old when she sings, because 1) that's the way her voice sounds, and 2) the songs themselves are whiny.

And one other thing about these teens that the industry keep on churning out... Do they seriously think that they know what love is? They sing about it and throw the word around like it's a petty thing. I don't think that they realize that true love, both for significant others and otherwise, is something that takes a lifetime of work to have and maintain.

I, for one, am 19 and know nothing practical about love... but at least I know that it's not just infatuation with the opposite sex. (and yes, James, I think that's an appropriate place for that smiley. :) )

Never heard of her until now. I found that 'performance' and . . . wow. I guess mediocre is the new talented. I've seen teenagers in the street that could carry a tune better than that.

And just an observation, but that dance she does (if it can be called that ) looks like she's doing the "I really, REALLY need the restroom!" dance :P

EDIT: Yikes, I looked at one of the comments on the video - "Taylor you're one of my idols. I wish to be like you one day seriously. You're a great role model for kids. We dont see out partying so i would like to thank you for setting a good example on how little girls should act."

There was quote over there that just made me spit my drink all over the monitor. Something about Taylor sounding like a cat in a room full of rockin' chairs. Not sure what that sounds like, but I'm thinkin' NOT TOO GOOD! And was Reba lip synching on her duet with Brooks & Dunn? She was not even pretending to sing at one point and you could hear a female voice just singing away. I was not sure if it was a backup singer, or if she really screwed up that badly. Yea, that night was a hot mess if I ever saw one. I was fully expecting a wardrobe malfunction of epic proportions when Garth & Tricia did a duet. Those had to be the tightest, ill-fitting outfits ever worn in public. EVER! My rant is over.

Edit: My last comment is not a slam at Garth or Tricia's size. I am plus-sized myself, and Tricia can look very classy and attractive in an outfit more suited to her figure.

Anyway...Miss Swift...

I'm sorry to say but she gets on my last frayed nerve. The last thing I want to hear at the end of the day is a whiney voice singing a whiney song. That being said, kudos to her for having the nerve to get up there and perform. Its a terribly difficult thing to do. I can understand where she might not sound as good live, I don't think anyone really does. Its not really about that for me, its about the show, the experience. Nerves and adrenaline can make your voice tremble and crack, I would know.

As for Miley Cryus, I think she's precious. I personally think she has a great voice, but I won't say more.

BINGO!! The stuff that comes out of NashVega$ nowadays is centered more on how sexy they can make them look (image) than what talent any of them have---and they all just about sound the same....hence the reason I don't listen to much of today's so-called 'country' music. So true. Its like Rascal Flatts, which I love, dont get me wrong here, but they're SO pop. Like a country boy band. I don't care where you grew up, if you don't sound country, you aren't country. Who was that other little girl they had lately? I don't remember her name, but she got on my nerves too.

I prefer to listen to guys like Joe Nichols, Darryl Worley, Dierks Bentley. They really stick to the old style country. Of course Tony knows how I adore my old school country. :P But you'll never hear another Possum or Hank Williams. Its gone.

Oh and did anyone notice how much King George seemed to like that performance?

So true. Its like Rascal Flatts, which I love, dont get me wrong here, but they're SO pop. Like a country boy band. I don't care where you grew up, if you don't sound country, you aren't country. Who was that other little girl they had lately? I don't remember her name, but she got on my nerves too.

I agree about rascal flatts. i liked them at first but now - toooo pop. yes, there's only one possum. i don't have a true favorite, but i like country to sound well - country! genna - i can't think of the girl unless you meant leann rimes. taylor swift makes me gag!

And all God's children said......AMEN!!! :D :D :D Rascal Flatts aren't anything more than a 'country-fied' boy-band!

Who was that other little girl they had lately? I don't remember her name, but she got on my nerves too.

Could that be LeeAnn Rimes? She's now more of a 'pop' singer as well (at least to me). When she first started, she reminded me so much of the great Patsy Cline and I thought: 'Yes! Just what Nashville needs!"

But now? Meh.....she's not any different than any of the other acts.

I prefer to listen to guys like Joe Nichols, Darryl Worley, Dierks Bentley. They really stick to the old style country. Of course Tony knows how I adore my old school country. :P

I like Joe Nichols but there's one song that I can't listen to anymore...."I'll Wait For You"....

Those days are long gone, sadly....and it's sad how the real country artists like George Jones & Hank Williams and Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash...and the list goes on and on) are being pushed out of the picture for the newer and 'good-looking' bunch....these legends deserve just as much (or if not more) respect as the newer ones because they paved the way for these newer acts.

NashVegas needs to sit down and get their priorities straight....but I don't see it happening now or if ever.

Not a big fan of Alabama, but I love love love NGDB!! I've heard some things by Shenandoah and Blackhawk, but they aren't played a whole lot on the local country stations. I love me some Hank Sr., Johnny Cash, George Jones, Chris Ledoux...

I admit, I'm still a huge RF fan. I love them, but they simply are not country. I still plan on dancing to "The Day Before You" at my wedding.

Kellie Pickler. She gets on my last nerve the way Swift does. *gag* I had to look up her name. I knew if I saw it, I'd know who I meant, if that makes sense.

EDIT: who spells their name "kellie"???

I think Brad Paisley writes a lot of songs about my husband....

I <3 Brad. He's an incredibly talented singer, songwriter, and performer. I just love him! He's great.

I'm proud to be pudgy! I always make fun of my fat and people think its hilarious. Seriously, when people make jokes at my fatness, I laugh. If I wanted to lose weight, I could but I just don't care. At least until I have to buy new clothes, so I attempt to at least maintain the same weight/pant size.

If I was pregnant, I'd show it off all over!!!

Steak......I want steak.....

I personally think she has a great voice, but I won't say more.

you obviously haven't seen mrs cyrus's myspace pictures of her pulling down her shirt to show her bra and laying on top of a guy with her shirt pulled up and then some more pics of her pulling up her shirt, standing in her underwear and making provocative poses. yeah, she's precious alright.

then of course posing topless on a magazine.

i thought they were talking about the video of her when her and her friend were in their bathing suits standing under a waterfall. i was thinking surely not.

I love billy ray and miley cyrus but i hope they don't let miley end up like other young stars. she was very wrong to pose as she did - and hefner wants her when she's older. back to country: i like brad's 'i'm still a guy', jason aldean's 'amarillo sky' and rodney atkins stuff.

I think the photo of Miley exposing her back was faily harmless. They do sell shirts with just a string across the back for girls her age. Not sure I'd let my daughter wear one, but it is far more acceptable than resorting to drenching yourself and dancing around wet with your clothes clinging to you in front of a national TV audience. Miley does not need to do that to sell records.

and it was the pose and the fact that she was covered by a bedsheet and it looked like she was naked and her hair was messed up and her lipstick was smeared...kinda gave off the wrong impression.

I've seen the photos you are talking about. What exactly is your point? To compare which girl has better behaviour? A waste of time, and rediculous.

The point of this thread isn't about comparing the lifestyles of Swift to Cyrus. Or to smear the names of either based on their personal behaviour. We are discussing their musical talent (actually we are disccusing Taylor's...or lack there of).

somebody brought up miley cyrus and i noted that taylor swift is a lot more talented than miley, a valid point considering miley is about to become a teenage billionaire. and for what? what has she done? what talent does she possess? taylor swift can at least write good songs by herself, play guitar on her songs, and sing better than miley can. apparently the point of the this thread is for middletree to attack taylor swift and so i'm defending her.

Not really. Just venting that so many fans are giving their money to someone who cannot sing. I wouldn't call it an attack as much as I am shaking my head. The fact that you think Swift can sing and David Cook cannot, makes me shake my head.

BTW: as an adult, I don't care either way about Miley Cyrus. Her songs and TV are aimed at kids, which are, like Sesame Street, not held to the same standard as the one Swift is to be held to.

that's my problem with miley cyrus. she is about to become a billionaire and she has absolutely no talent. i don't know why people give their money to her. and she's not just aimed at kids, i've heard her song on the radio too and have seen her dance provocatively and sing terribly on Idol Gives Back.

You also 'noted' alot more about Miley that was unneccessary and completely unrelated to the topic.

because someone said miley is precious, and that's obviously not true. for someone who used to talk about being modest and wanting to be a light for Christ, taking a bunch of provocative pictures of yourself is pretty hypocritical and i don't think she deserves the money and fame she's getting, and i especially wouldn't want little kids looking up to her.

Here's another perspective to throw into the mix...

Taylor Swift just might be like me, meaning naive. So if she actually was the one who came up with the idea to end her song in a waterfall, she may not have known what she was getting herself into. Whether on TV in front of millions or not, it might have just seemed like a good idea to her at the time. And the only reason this came to mind at all was because my reaction to it wasn't the same as everyone else's. I really didn't think anything about it, so I figured that it was entirely possible that she didn't either.

Be that as it may, there were plenty of people around her who could have stopped her, or told her it was a bad idea, or something. So I would blame them more than her.

Just something to think about...

story on Fox News:

Taylor Swift Snaps Over Miley Cyrus

If looks could kill, there is one reporter who would definitely be dead.

Excited 18-year-old country crooner Taylor Swift cruised backstage following her win for Top Female Vocalist at the Academy of Country Music Awards last weekend, but her gracious smile soon turned sour when a reporter bombarded her with questions on controversial teen starlet Miley Cyrus.

Swift (who is as humble, honest and media-friendly as they come) uncharacteristically snapped at the questioning reporter, forcing everyone to take a few steps back.

"Honestly Miley is a really good friend and an amazing person," Taylor scolded after several seconds of staring him down and twisting her mouth in anger. "And you ..."

She held her tongue and was quickly beckoned away, shutting him off entirely.

Well, it's nice to know that in the show-biz world — notorious for its ***** and back-stabbers — Miley, at least, can still rely on one other famous friend to stand by her during the tough times.

That's what I thought. From the report it seems like the reporter probably asked something nosey and inappropriate about Miley. I had actually forgotten they were such good friends. Earlier this year at an award show they did some dialogue together.

Some of those reporters need to be put in their place.
