When you first started to sing ho long did you practice every day? Did you start by mimicing someone or was that just your own? I sing in some small churches in my area and I have a deep voice so I try to mock the way you sing and was curious. God bless.

Is practice supposed to help? I'm tone deaf so any suggestions are appreciated. :P

Well, I suppose when I was real young I tried to copy my dad's singing. He's a very good singer and guitar player. But I definitely learned phrasing and singing from so many artists that I sang along with on the radio. I tried to sound like everyone from Michael Jackson to Phil Collins. Yeah, I know, big difference in those voices. I remember trying to sing along with "We Are the World" (kids asks your parents) and trying to do impressions of every single singer on that song. In my mind I sounded just like all of them, from Bob Dylan to Lionel Richie. But I'm sure that I just sounded like me. But singing those songs by those artists gave me a lot of experience and technique lessons. Good luck! Mac

Mary! You are so funny! But coming from someone [like me] who can't sing - I do the same thing! Why! I just did it today - trying to sound like Mac on the song "Come Together" and "Blessed Assurance"... lol. It's fun! :P

I sing at the top of my lungs in the car until I get to a red light, then I stop.... then start again as soon as the car is rolling. Jontel and I got so carried away screaming out "Rockstar" on our trip this weekend that we missed our turn!

If you ever wondered what can bridge the gap between a mom and her 6-year-old.....

No, afraid I have not. I have never seen any of the VeggieTales videos. I don't have kids, and never had the chance to see them. They look like they would be very cute though. Correct me if I am wrong, but did Third Day have something to do with one of the VeggieTales videos??

That must be what I had heard about!!! The Water Beetles!! How cute!! LOL!! I need to see that one myself!! I think they should do a Saturday morning cartoon of Third Day!! Now wouldn't that be cute!! They would look just like they do on the Toons t-shirts and they could have all kinds of wonderful adventures!! Or maybe I am just so sleepy this just sounds like a good idea. :P :P

Ok, the "We are the World" comment :D ...we sang that at graduation the year I graduated HS (I actually had a solo in it, my one and only). Now that dates me, older than Mac!

You mean he's not going to be on the tour with them!?!

No one told me that! Well now I don't have to decide whether or not to wear my Gomer shirt or my Veggie Tales shirt...
Whew! One less thing to worry about.

I tried to sound like everyone from Michael Jackson to Phil Collins.

I'm so glad your "trying" didn't work! Even though MJ was a legend in his earlier time and Phil was great too ~ there would've never been a TD! I know I'll never come close to sounding like anyone that actually has the God-given talent to sing, I'm glad it's you I'm trying to sing like and not them. Although, occasionally, in the kitchen...I'll "heehee" and moonwalk! Mac, can't ya get a signature move????????

I could never sing with you, Mac....you sing in the wrong key for me! When I try, it's either too low or I have to reach up into falsetto and I sound like a gerbil. sigh.............

I just try to sing songs the best I can and make them my own. :) But I do sing every day, even if it's just in the car to and from work.

When I do listen to songs, and sing along, I try to mimic their runs and such, or try to copy the subtlety or strength of how they sing particular phrases. I'm fairly confident in my vocal ability, but come lately, I'm more into watching how people perform songs, and how they bring that across visually and connect with an audience. That's something I'm lacking and would like to improve on.

That post could have been written by me. :D

I never have spent a whole lot of time practicing. I just naturally sing all the time, so that counts as my practicing. I've kinda done what Mac said. The only time I ever practice anything, is when I'm getting ready to "perform." Then I'll make sure to practice whatever I'm singing to make sure I know it well.

I think singing is something I'm going to be working at my entire life, and I hope that as more and more time passes I get better and better.

Chics?
Haven't referred to myself or been referred to in that way in, well ever.

For me, I don't want to sing like Mac, I like to sing with Mac in either harmony or some kind of back up. If there aren't backgrounds then I make up my own ;)

BTW: Cotton, I bet you rock at Innocent or Carry My Cross those are awesome songs to just sing it out with!

The closest I come to having a deep, rockin' manly voice is when my throat is froggy from bad allergies or a cold. :P Which is funny to hear indeed. :D

Thanks, but I don't want to try in front of Third Day, I'm not that good and I'd probably faint.
