As I've prolly mentioned here numerous times, the band that I play lead guitar in (Irons In The Fire (http://www.myspace.com/ironsinthefire)) will be opening for Marty Stuart on July 17, 2008. I've been asked to find a song to do for the show where I could 'show off" my playing abilities. I'd love to do one of Marty's songs that he does....but I'm not sure if I have to get his permission to do so.

Anybody got any ideas?? I'm really wanting this show to be a great show cuz it, personally, means a lot to me since I'm a huge fan of Marty's.

Any thoughts are welcome!

If it's a paid performance then I believe you need his permission. I don't know your style, so it's hard to make a suggestion. If you really want to do one of his songs, get in touch with him and ask!

Sandy,

It is a paid performance but I've heard that some artists actually like it if a band covers their tunes during a performance--although I've never seen it actually done at any show I've been at.

I'm not actually sure how to go about getting in touch with Marty. I'm guessing the fan club would be the best route to go.....

Our style (my style) is deeply rooted in classic country and 50s-60s rock & roll (Elvis, The Byrds-especially their late 60s period with Clarence White on electric guitar). We also do some originals. You can check out our stuff here:

If you do one of his songs, I'd recommend doing a lesser known or a song you know he won't be playing. You probably will need to get permission but not sure how you would go about doing that, most of the country guys seem down to earth to not care.... For them it's more about the music than it is the money.

you dont need his permission to cover one of his songs because you arent making money off his song.

as far as a song to show off your chops, cover some Hendrix

I don't think Hendrix is considered country. ;) Good suggestion though.

I've decided not to cover any song of his...that would be a bad move...simply cuz I don't know what his set list will be like that afternoon or evening....and...I might suck at playing one of his songs....

I still ain't sure which one I wanna do just yet, though....I'm just wantin' the show to go well that afternoon & evening....it's an honest-to-goodness dream come true for me (and the other band members of Irons) to get this opportunity to open a show for him....

if allison kraus, t-bone burnett, and robert plant can translate Led Zeppelin songs to bluegrass, then a country band covering Hendrix is extremely do-able.

Tony Trout...

It's hard to beat Mudcrutch's cover of "Lover Of The Bayou" by The Byrds. Maybe this song works for you guys.
