Hmmmmm, do you think this thread will keep on going like the movie thread? I know it takes longer to read a book than it does to watch a movie, but ........ I say let's give it a try!
The last book I read was A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, the same author of The Kite Runner. Both books I had a hard time putting down. Both books deal with unfortunate circumstances with elements of good. Not a feel good story, but Khaled is an excellent story teller and you want to finish it.
The 2nd to last book I finished was The Case for Faith by Lee Strobel. Strobel tackles the most common arguments against the christian faith by interviewing experts in said fields. Some chapters were quite lengthy for one topic and took a while to get through, but overall a real good read.

I am reading the third book in the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer, Eclipse. It's about teenage vampires & werewolves, and the one human girl who finds herself inexplicably tied to these mythical creatures. These books are incredibly addictive. I'm reading this one slowly, because the next one does not come out till August. It's going to be a long summer.

The Darkest Evening of the Year, by Dean Koontz
Amy Redwing has dedicated her life to the southern California organization she founded to rescue abandoned and endangered golden retrievers. Among dog lovers, she's a legend for the risks she'll take to save an animal from abuse. Among her friends, Amy's heedless devotion is often cause for concern. To widower Brian McCarthy, whose commitment she can't allow herself to return, Amy's behavior is far more puzzling and hides a shattering secret.
Probably my favorite author. All his books are so different from each other, although, this is his second or third book that features his favorite golden retrievers. :)
This was a good one, a very fast read, although Koontz books usually are. Had this one finished in just a couple of days. Compare that to the latest Stephen King book, Lisey's Story, which I've just renewed for about the 5th or 6th time from the library (I've had it since December! ) because it's off to a very slow start, but I don't want to give up on it, since it's a King book, but there's always something BETTER to read.

Just finished "The Story of My Disappearance" by Paul Watkins
From back cover:
"Although Paul Wedekind has created a new life for himself as a fisherman on the coast of Rhode Island, he is haunted by his violent past. As a patriotic young man, he enlisted in the East German Stasi and was sent to Afghanistan, where he and a friend were taken prisoner by the Mujahadin. Years later Paul is sent to America as a contact for the KGB, where his life is changed forever by one woman. Together, these two exiles must find the strength to resist the demands of the men who claim to own them."
The book was only 213 pages long and it kept my interest for that long. But not a book I would recommend as being a must read. Now if Jan Karon's book "At Home in Mitford" had only been 213 pages I could be adding that to my list. But at 542, I just couldn't finish it. Not enough drama for me I guess. Did anyone else think that?

Not sure what the book is called - but it's a Readers Digest Nonfiction book with 4 stories in it.
The last one I read was called "In the Absence of Angesl" which entails the struggle of Elizabeth and Paul Glaser in dealing with AIDS when it was just first discovered. She became HIV positive when she received infected blood from a C-section complication. She passed the virus onto her daughter via nursing (I didn't know that HIV could be passed through breast milk!) and her son in birth. Paul Glaser played Starsky in the Starsky and Hutch television series.
Good story.

I finished House last night. I got it on Sat. I was up till 3 A.M reading on Sun. morning. It was very good stuff. I think it deserves a sequel. I was suprised by some of the nagitive reviews on Amazon.
And let me tell ya Amazon.com is the BEST place to get books. I got Jack Higgins new Dillon adventure in new hardback form I only paid like 7 something for it. When I went to Barnes and Nobles a few weeks a ago that same book was 25 dollars.
anyway.........right now I am reading Harlan Coben's new book, "The Woods" I think I'll read Adam after that.

A Knight of the Word" by Terry Brooks, the second book in the Word/Void trilogy.
How is this series? When I was in jr high I loved the Shannara series, but those are the only books by him that I've read. I'm assuming A Knight is in the fantasy genre?

I've read a few of the Shannara trilogy and loved them, and also the Landover series. The Word/Void trilogy is also excellent, but is different from his other books in that it takes place in the U.S. I think they actually do end up tying into the Shannara books, but I haven't read enough to find out how yet.

I'm a big time highlighter-underliner when I'm reading most non-fiction books. Are you? Mind sharing a highlight or two? I think I have one book on my shelf by Dr. Laura, but I haven't read it. I used to enjoy catching her on the radio from time to time.
I just finished nigel's, 'lessons from the road'.
How was it? I have it on my Amazon wish list.
I use Stormie O'Martian's book "The Power of a Praying Parent' frequently in my Moms In Touch group. Great book -- also use "The Power of a Praying Wife". Filled with specific prayers that had things I hadn't thought to pray for.
Okay, Joyce Meyer. I've heard good things, I've heard bad things. What's the consensus in this thread?
Last night I finished reading "Exposing the Real Che Guevara and the Useful Idiots who Idolize Him" by Humberto Fontova. From the book jacket: Mr. Fontova fled Cuba in 1961 at the age of seven with his family. In this book he interviews the few people still alive who interacted with Che and can tell the truth about him, while overturning the myths and legends. Who was Ernesto "Che" Guevara? MYTH: International man of the people. Humanitarian. Brave freedom fighter. Lover of literature and life. Advocate of the poor and oppressed. REALITY: Cold-blooded murderer. Sadistic torturer. Power-hungry materialist. Terrorist who inspired destruction and bloodshed through Latin America.
I didn't know much about this man and wanted to find out more. Interesting read.

Dirk Pitt fights a Chinese smuggler who is an expert at getting illegal immigrants into the United States. Thrown into the mix is the lost treasure of Chiang Kai-shek.
Also reading a children's book (for work of course! ;)) called Blood on the River: Jamestown 1607 by Elisa Carbone:
Traveling to the New World in 1606 as the page to Captain John Smith, twelve-year-old orphan Samuel Collier settles in the new colony of James Town, where he must quickly learn to distinguish between friend and foe.

Finished reading "Love is a Decision" by Gary Smalley with John Trent.
Nothing ground breaking, but definitely encouraging with good reminders. Here's a bit of what stuck out for me:
* Remaining tender during a trial is one of the mos powerful ways to build an intimate relationship. (James 1:19-20) -- Lectures and Tenderness do not mix.
* The literal picture behind the word "forgiveness" is untying a knot.
* God has built into every man the natural ability to be the very loving leader his family needs.
* There's a fundamental problem with expecting fulfillment from people, places, and things. These are the gifts of life, not the source of life. Any time we expect the gifts of life to give us what only God can, we're asking for our cups to be drained of energy and life itself.
* Jesus Christ is the only consistent power source. Only He can give me the strength to love my spouse as I should over a lifetime.
* A stomach in knots means I'm focusing on one of the gifts of life for love, peace, and joy, rather than the Source of life. The level of my cup doesn't vary from day to day, circumstance to circumstance. His mercies are new every morning -- a fresh full cup of life every day.

Their computer will match you with other people for a potential trade. You have the option to reject a trade if you wish. There are also 3 way trades. If you want, for a small fee you can print out a postage label from the site.
Just a possibility. I'm having fun with it ....... You might want to look into it, especially for books that have been out for a while.

The Twilight series is the vampire series, right? I've heard conflicting things on that, from "amazing" to "horrible" anyone care to offer some insight?
Well, all I can say is I don't think they're horrible at all. I really like them. I bought the fourth book when it came out Saturday and had it finished by Monday. They are love stories, which may turn some people off. But they're not mushy, gushy, cheesy love stories. They do tend to appeal more to the female population, but I do know some guys who have read them and like them a lot, my brother being one of them. I really like the way in which the stories are told. She wrote them in first person narrative, which I find to be interesting. Most people don't do that.
The one negative in my mind about these books, is that they are the most poorly edited books I have ever read in my life. There are little mistakes everywhere, and it drives me crazy.
To anybody who is thinking about reading them, my thoughts are you'll never know if you'll like them until you read them.
Like I said, the last book I read was the fourth book in the Twilight saga, Breaking Dawn." It was great. It threw me for a loop about every other page, and that's usually the mark of a good book. I can't wait for Midnight Sun!

I'm working on one right now called "Change of Heart" by Jodi Picoult, about a death row convict who wants to donate his heart to the sister of the girl he was in jail for killing, and all the odd stuff (ie miracles) that tends to happen around him, ala The Green Mile, while they try to work out the legalities of getting that to happen.
Had to leave it at a critical spot this afternoon, because my lunch hour was over. HATED to put it down.
I'm reading "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien... about the Viet Nam war from a personal perspective. Not only did the soldiers carry grenades, weapons... the necessities of war... but also things in their hearts. Things they'll never forget. I am so moved by this book. Why in God's name were we there anyway?

I am still reading Eye of the World. It's pretty good stuff if you are into the fantasy genre. I am a casual fantasy reader. But I have plenty of favorites in this genre
But I did however read Step On A Crack by James Patterson and am reading the 5th Horseman. His books are quick reads so I can generally finish them in 3 or 4 days if even that. I read Along Came a Spider years ago ago after I saw the movie and both were good but as you know the book is always better, it was great. I want to read Maximum Ride next
Also I have a hankering to read the Alex Ryder series and the Spiderwick Chronicles as well as to finish the Lemony Snicket series

I'm nearly at the end of the first Twilight book. For some reason I am really loving it! Maybe it's because it's a very easy read, and the characters are very likeable. Whatever the reason I don't care....it's one of the best books I've read in ages!! It came highly recommended from Rhonda here on the boards. She's ever so slightly obsessed and I can see why. I can't read it fast enough to get onto the next book!

Twelve ordinary men. A good book that talks about each apostle and their different personalities. The way they were before becomming followers of Christ and how they changed. Its a really good in depth look at each of them. Even Judas is explained. I think he's the one that baffled me the most. How can you be so close to Jesus, witness all those miracles and yet betray him. I think I finally understand it. I highly reccomend it.

What did you think of these books?
Mere Christianity was very good. I probably would've liked it even better if I had read it over a period smaller than five months (which is how long it ended up taking). Either way, it still deserves another read... it's one of those books that is difficult to digest over a single reading.
Jesus Wants to Save Christians was exceptional. It takes the ideas presented in the NT and compares them to the OT. It talks about the idea of the "New Exodus"... very interesting, indeed. I don't have a full enough grasp of the concept to explain it. It's over 200 pages, but it reads very quickly, mostly because of Rob Bell's writing style. For an example, here is my attempt at imitating it:
If you have ever read Velvet Elvis,
in-depth,
eyes
wide
open,
then you know
that he writes in a certain way,
to emphasize every
single
word.
This can get a little irritating, to the point where it's difficult to stand reading more than a chapter (or "movement", as they're called) in an evening. However, it seemed to have a lot more actual paragraphs than Velvet Elvis did. Anyway, it's definitely a good buy. Eventually, I'll read it again, but I have at least 15 books that I own and have yet to read. :o
I hope this helps!

Parts of this book are hard to read...the suffering he went through along with many others is unimagineable. Still...it is an excellent read. Tear off the wrapper...you won't be able to put it down:) . VOM is a awesome organization, their magazine is pretty good to.

Yes, I get VOM magazine too. I'm a few months behind. But I've started reading parts of it to my boys. Their eyes are being opened. How blessed we are to live in a nation where we are free to worship our God. Our brothers and sisters in Christ who are being persecuted for their faith need our prayers and encouragement -- how can we not especially when we are so blessed??

I just finished "Lessons from the Road". And while I enjoyed it, I TIVO'd a segment on Gospel Music's Faith and Fame series on Third Day. Nigel states he's been with the group since 1998 (although not full time, evidently). In the segment of Faith and Fame, Mark states that they don't have a road pastor, but that they use various people to perform that function to keep them grounded in the Word. I'd never have given it another thought, except for the book. Just something interesting, know what I mean?

This is the first ethnography I've ever read. It's interesting, but because it's an ethnography there's so much that you have to muddle through. But it's still good. I just finished reading The Stronghold of God: Finding God’s Place of Immunity from Attacks of the Enemy by Francis Frangipane. This is a quick read. Easy to understand. Short chapters.
Here is a part of one of the last chapters: “Jesus also warned of the deception that would occur at the end of the age. When we consider His words, we instinctively think of false teachers and prophets; these will, indeed, mislead many. (See Matthew 24.) But there is another dimension to the enemy’s tactics that is perhaps even more dangerous. We may actually know the truth but be too preoccupied and distracted to obey it. If this is the case, greater judgment will fall on us than upon him who did not know God’s will at all. Jesus warned, “Be on guard, that your hearts may not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day come on you suddenly like a trap” (Luke 21:34). Dissipate means “to fritter away; employ aimlessly; squander; be wasteful.” Besides giving us His grace, the second most important gift Christ has given us is time. If we do not have time, we cannot develop spiritually in any of God’s other gifts or resources. If we fail to make time for the service of God, we will be unprepared for this day, which, Jesus said, “will come upon all those who dwell on the face of all the earth” (Luke 21:35). The day of the Lord will not be an occasion for joy; it will come upon you like a trap. Over and again the Lord warned that those who put Him off now will be put off by Him later. (See Matt. 24:36-25:46; Luke 13:24-30; John 12:47-48). They will seek His protection, but He will not provide it. Why? It takes time to grow in the ways, knowledge, and grace of God; it is this very growth that creates within us access to God’s stronghold. Today is the day to prepare for tomorrow; to wait for tomorrow to ready ourselves will be too late.”
I needed to read that. I fear I'm a dissipater. :(

Okay I picked this book up Jesus Life Coach on the bargain shelf at my local Christian book store and my first thought was, "how cheesy" and my second was, "I bet they twist Jesus up like a pretzel to fit their agenda". I stood there and read a "chapter" of the book. It's set up more like a quick read devotional and I was hooked. The writing is thought provoking but the questions at the end of each one-really make you look at yourself, at how you understand God, it has pointed out some errors in my thinking. It has been humbling and thought provoking and applicable to everyday life.
I like it. Not quite done with it though.

I also just started reading Monster by Jonathan Kellerman. It is rated only three stars on amazon with some negative reviews. It's pretty good so far, then again it is my first Kellerman novel and apparently he has written many books in this series. Most of the reviewers have no doubt read the older ones and probably find this one sort of redundant or recycled. I happened to have started with one of the latest.
I find the same thing with Jack Higgins I am a HUGE fan of his and have read some 40 of his 60+ novels and some of them can be quite redundant but that doesn't stop me.
He has a series of books that feature the same characters, 16 or 17 books now with another one on the way and with the exception of the last two some of the latest ones are not good.
