View Full Version : My lyrics too similar to Third Day's?

I was looking through my lyrics the other night and found a lyric I wrote six years ago called "Lay It Down." I like the lyric except I realized it has very similar concepts and phrases as Third Day's "Slow Down" from their upcoming CD Revelation. I'm not accusing Mac of copying me ;) but I'm concerned that my lyrics are too similar and if I try to produce this as a song, people will think I copied Mac even though I wrote my lyrics six years earlier.

Thoughts?

Both songs:

Slow Down
by Third Day

Tell me to slow down if you think that the road I'm on is going no where. Tell me to slow down if you know that I'm going to fast for my own good. Tell me to slow down if the way is leading to a dead end. Tell me to slow down, turn around, let me change the way I'm going.
Chorus: Oh! I don't want to let go of all the things that I know are keeping me away from my life. Oh! I don't want to slow down, no I don't want to look around. I can't seem to work it out. So, help me God!

Lay It Down
by Jason Mitchener

If this passion that I follow
Should grow greater than my love for you
If this life that I am living
Isn’t what you called me to
Then I need your help now
Help me lay it down

Chorus:
Lay it down at the foot of your cross
As I give it all to you
Lay it down and surrender
To your point of view
Even though I feel like holding on
And it hurts to let it go
I’ll lay it down and find freedom
Deeper than I’ve known

If this burden that consumes me
Should get bigger as I’m going on
Then I know that I will weaken
Jesus, I need to be strong
Lord, I need your help now
Help me lay it down

Chorus:
Lay it down at the foot of your cross
As I give it all to you
Lay it down and surrender
To your point of view
Even though I feel like holding on
And it hurts to let it go
I’ll lay it down and find freedom
Deeper than I’ve known

Bridge:
Whatever blocks my vision
Whatever chains me down
Whatever keeps me losing
Lord, I’ll lay it down

Chorus:
Lay it down at the foot of your cross
As I give it all to you
Lay it down and surrender
To your point of view
Even though I feel like holding on
And it hurts to let it go
I’ll lay it down and find freedom
Deeper than I’ve known

Since we don't know all the lyrics for "Slow Down", it's hard to say. However I don't think your lyrics are too similar. You may have the same concept, but the lyrics are presented a little differently IMO. I love your song, Jason!

I agree! Love the song J.

What irritates me as a guitar player is I'll be messing around and playing this really cool progression...thinking about writing some lyrics for it and then I hear the same progression on the radio  Sometimes I guess it happens! :D

Not too similar at all. In fact... I think I'll work on THIS one first and then the other 2 you sent. LOVE IT!

Cool. Glad you like my lyrics enough to possibly work with them.
