April 25 is ANZAC Day in both Australia and New Zealand. It commerorates the day, 94 years ago when soldiers from both Australia and New Zealand landed on the shores of Gallipoli during the First World War. More than 8000 brave Australian servicemen and 2700 New Zealand soldiers died during the campaign.
When we went to war, we had only been a nation for 14 years. Still babies. The ANZAC spirit - what it means to be Australian - was defined on that day; on those beaches. It determined our identity; as a nation in our own right. The ANZAC spirit is who Australia is. The following is from a poem called For the Fallen. It is recited in rememberance of those who died defending our nation - and our freedom.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
LEST WE FORGET.

I had a feeling you'd show up today, Sandie. I had a quick check in both The Zone and CE/HT but couldn't see anything. Maybe I'm just getting old...

I naughtily slept in this morning, missing my intention of attending a dawn service around the corner..
But I'm watching the ANZAC Day match... Picked the Bombers in a close one.. (That, and I'm a Port fan who can't stand the idea of barracking for Collingwood!!!)
But yes... Lest We Forget... We would not be who we are if not for those who went before us.

*Wiki's Gallipoli*
D, if you ever get a chance, rent the movie Gallipoli with a young Mel Gibson and an Aussie actor named Mark Lee. Excellent film.

Yes it is. Sorry. I wasn't trying to lessen the sacrifices made by our New Zealand brothers. I am obviously just a little biased toward my own country. :D

1981 is when it came out. 2005 is when Sam Neill & Jeremy Irons narrate an account of this subject.

No Problems, As a new zealander i really pray that future generations will always remember the war fallen and the ones that returned long after the last soliders have died .
