View Full Version : Parental filtering for FireFox?

This was something we never really bothered with before, but my 15 year old nephew has started using my computer a lot, and it would just make me feel a bit better if I had some kind of filter on my browser. I've just been reading a lot of facts and info on anti-porn sites and I had no idea that the industry was that harmful. But that's for another thread . . .

Anywho, anyone got any suggestions for me?

(And I know IE has parental controls. We hate IE with a passion seeing as how it freezes up all the time; we never use it anymore)

I've never had IE freeze on me, but putting that aside, you need to filter it before it gets to the computer, so it doesn't matter which browser is used.

I've herd good things about CyberSitter and CyberPatrol, but never used either one.

We had NetNanny for awhile when I was younger. I hated it but that's because you could limit how long we could be on the internet, and it blocked some celebrity gossip sites I just had to visit.

Well, it's not a time limit thing, and I just want to block out nudity and such.

You could always download adblock to block unwanted ads. I know a lot of guys here at school have it installed so they don't get bombarded with skanky ads.

If you didn't want to go the Net Nanny (or other blocking software) route, or just want something you can use in your Firefox until you get software, there are Firefox add ons which claim to block inappropriate content. I can't vouch for any of these, but here's the link to a search for add ons I did:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=filter&cat=all

And definitely get AdBlocker or AdMuncher to get rid of the sleazeball ads.

And while your at it, it would be a good idea to make sure you have up-to-date anti-virus software, a firewall enabled, and some adware/spyware detection software. There are free versions of all of these types of software that you can download and use. Adware could be causing your problems with Internet Exploder.

SafeEyes works great for us...

I can't vouch for IE but could never find any worthwhile parental controls.

Have not looked into FireFox controls now that we use it.

Thanks for all the tips, I'll look into them. I've had adblock installed for a while now; I love it. I got tired of flash ads for upcoming movies and stuff. All we really need to worry about is him hitting the google search way of things as far as sleaze goes, not that he seems likely, you know. He's a good kid, but curiosity can get the best of us. So far though, he mainly just goofs around with his church friends on the site that rhymes with pie face

I'm hoping the nostalgia will wear off after a while ;)
