Does anyone know about the book called "The Secret?" Someone I know has been reading it and seems very enthusiastic about it's teaching. From what she described it sounds kinda new-agey. I do not know anything else.

I have not read it, but I have a friend who's boss swears by it, and forced them all to watch a video about it. My friend seemed to think it was a lot of self-help psychobabble, rather than seeking divine intervention through prayer. I tend to be skeptical of self-help books, and the whole "Oprah says it's good, so we must all love it" phenomenon. I think the "Secret" is praying and listening for the Lord's guidance in your life.

Amen to that! Yeah, she was saying something about what you give to the universe, the universe gives back--sounds like "karma" teaching. I tried to tell her that it's not the "universe" that gives--for that is impossible--but it is God we should be seeking. She got a little defensive, and I let it drop since I do not know much about the book. It just concerned me.

Here's how we have it cataloged at my library...

...about manifesting and using the Law of Attraction to create whatever you want in your life. Helps you understand how important it is to consciously choose the thoughts you hold each day and to keep your thoughts and actions focused on what you really want to attract into your life

Whatever that means!

Someone gave me this book on CD and they made me listen to it but well I had no interest in it whatsoever. Its sitting in my DVD case.

The Secret kind of scares me because its one of those things that can be incredibly deceiving.

Someone let my brother and I borrow the DVD to check it out. What it boils down to is New Age teaching repackaged as The Secret.

The whole premise is that you can influence the "universe" or their "god," if you will, to give you what you desire. It is basically taking the brain and will out of God and making Him the "universe" that will bend to your wants. The old "God in a box" mentality, but they go beyond this in that their "god" is not a person, more of a force. The DVD introduces this in a very subtle manner. It is so slick that it parallels some Biblical truths, but then twists them by the time you reach its end. For those people not well-versed in the Word, it will definitely draw them away.

I think "The Secret" is that this is New Age teaching that the author doesn't want you to realize is New Age. Surprise, you've been duped.

The Law of Attraction isn't new age, but it's still dangerous. If you've ever seen "What the bleep do we know?" then you know how dangerous it is.

The idea is that your mind is in tune with the universe. They use quantum physics (which is mostly theory) as their foundation to make you believe that anything you think of, the universe brings to you. By their rationale, I guess you could say that all those that were in the WTC seven years ago were thinking about having a plane crash through their window.

I do believe that the mind has more power than we think. But these guys go way too far.

My father-in-law gave me the DVD a year ago. Said that it was amazing! the way to live! etc etc.

I asked him if Jesus was mentioned in it and he said no. So I handed him my Bible and told him "this is the way to live - read it"....and thew the DVD in the trash.

I knew something was up when many non-Christians and even one Christian at work starting raving.

The Secret reveals the most powerful law in the universe. The knowledge of this law has run like a golden thread through the lives and the teachings of all the prophets, seers, sages and saviors in the world's history, and through the lives of all truly great men and women. All that they have ever accomplished or attained has been done in full accordance with this most powerful law.

Without exception, every human being has the ability to transform any weakness or suffering into strength, power, perfect peace, health, and abundance.

Rhonda Byrne's discovery of The Secret began with a glimpse of the truth through a 100 year old book. She went back through centuries, tracing and uncovering a common truth that lay at the core of the most powerful philosophies, teachings and religions in the world.

What Rhonda discovered is now captured in The Secret, a film that has been viewed by millions around the world. The Secret has also been released as an audio-book and printed book with more than six million copies in print.

The Secret explains with simplicity the law that is governing all lives, and offers the knowledge of how to create - intentionally and effortlessly - a joyful life. This is the secret to everything - the secret to unlimited happiness, love, health and prosperity.

This is the secret to life.

The best book of all...... the Bible. Read that one through a few times and then you'll be able to decide what books written by humans are worth spending time reading. Anything that is not in line with the bible is not worth reading.

Don't substitute books written by humans for the bible. I do like to read devotionals and have read a couple of good books by people that are tried and true Christians. But I always go back to God's word. It's all you'll ever need.

The danger in "The Secret" is that they are taking God out of the process. This puts "The Secret" on the same spiritual and also technical level as uttering spells and the likes, imho. The only difference is that the lie that is involved in the whole thing has been adjusted and repositioned a bit.
