hahah...check this out.

I'm working on my next book on the life of Pastors: Preaching to the Masses - 50 Megachurch Pastor Profiles

Last night I sent out 30 sum submissions to various churches, mostly east of the Miss river. I guess i sent one to Barrack Obama's church by accident...

It was an inquiry for their pastor to be interviewed. Here's the AUTO response I got.....very interesting...

------------------------------------------
Thank you for your interest in Trinity United Church of Christ and for your consideration of our member, Sen. Barack Obama, in the Democratic primary election. Due to the high volume of emails and inquiries, we are unable to respond to each one personally. We were overwhelmed with “hits” after Senator Obama’s historic victory in the Iowa democratic caucus.
Barack Obama has been a member of Trinity United Church of Christ for nearly two decades. As a young community organizer, new to Chicago, Barack met with Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., Trinity’s Senior Pastor, seeking advice. He received good counsel about the complexities of life in Chicago and the challenges faced by residents in poor communities like South Chicago’s Altgeld Gardens.
The United Church of Christ (http://www.ucc.org), Trinity’s denominational affiliation, is “a community of faith that seeks to respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed.” It was founded in 1957 through the union of several different Christian traditions. Not only does Trinity not exclude anyone from membership or attendance based on race or ethnicity, but:
The majority of UCC members are white; the conference minister of the Illinois Conference of the UCC (Rev. Jane Fisler Hoffman) and her husband (both white) are members of Trinity (You can watch a video of Rev. Hoffman speaking at Trinity about her positive experiences there.); Trinity has been instrumental in working with and lending financial and staff support to the development of new UCC churches in Gary, IN (with the Indiana-Kentucky Conference of the UCC, Milwaukee, WI (with the Wisconsin Conference of the UCC), and Benton Harbor, MI (with the Michigan Conference of the UCC). There is no anti-American sentiment in the theology or the practice of Trinity United Church of Christ. To be sure, there is prophetic preaching against oppression, racism and other evils that would deny the American ideal. Trinity is “Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian.”
Trinity was founded in 1961 and had 87 families when Dr. Wright started his tenure in 1972. Currently, as Dr. Wright anticipates a 2008 retirement, there are more than 8,000 members, 70 ministries, and three Sunday worship services. You and your family can watch these services online at 7:30am, 11:00am and 6:00pm CST.
If you require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact Senator Obama's office:

Yours in Christ!

They sort of contradict themselves when they say "a majority of our members are white" and then proceed to give their motto "Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian." They call Africa the "motherland." I see serious problems with their theology.

I didn't really read it...But, what are the chances of me submitting to them?

I sent 40 emails out last night....carefully picking these churches and their pastors for my book. Then I got that this morning....

I had no idea....

No, they say the denomination is primarly white, but them as a church are "unashamedly black" so I don't see the contradiction....

How can a predominantly white church be "unashamedly" black? I'd really like to hear this one. Why do they even place any emphasis on race at all? Seems like if they were so committed to unity they wouldn't even refer to themselves as an Afrocentric church.

Hope you don't mind me quoting you David.

A predominantly white denomination has an church that is "unashamedly" black church.

My church is in the SBC (Southern Baptist Convention). We are in the midwest with very few black members. There are, however, a lot of "black" Baptist churches too. Those probably contain white people too.

Now this question can be answered:

"Why do they even place any emphasis on race at all? Seems like if they were so committed to unity they wouldn't even refer to themselves as an Afrocentric church."

I'm going to do down with you in flames agreeing with you on this one brother. Although it can be answered my belief is those answers indicate racism.

*where did that come from said the mostly silent one?*

Well, I hope he follows thru, but the interview is about the pastors testimony and life story...not Obama. However, i hope he wishes to touch on it....and I will certianly try, but it just can't be the centerpiece...

Why wouldn't they? They must be elated because Obama just got 12 more delegates in WYOMING!!!

*realizes that may have nothing to do with his church because just less than half actually are Bush lovers*

UCC is white but TUCC is black.

I was a little confused about that...I have 2 friends that go to TUCC......I've seen their choir...one of my friends is a leader in the choir.....if most were white, must have been a lot of tan people there.....
