Didn't want to clutter up the Book Club thread with things NOT about the book du jour over there, and the U23D movie thread was pretty specific as well, so decided to start up a thread about ANYTHING U2. Been thinking about it for about a week or so, once I started thumbing through a few of my books and kept running across some great quotes, and well, the last couple of days of Pearls Before Swine cartoons were all the motivation I needed to start the thread. LOL.

Oh, forgot the first few quotes...
From U2 Faraway So Close - by BP Fallon (one of my favorite books for a quick U2 fix): "Bono, he's technically illiterate. Backstage in New Jersey, he's trying in vain to get the cap off a bottle of headache pills. 'I can't get the top off', he's wailing. 'Of course you can't', says Dennis. 'It's childproof'." :D
From Bono In His Own Words - by Susan Black: "All our songs are about God or women, and we often get the two mixed up."
From U2 At the End of The World - by Bill Flanigan: "They were by nature truth-tellers, and Bono was by nature a big mouth."

It was late when I posted last night so I was too lazy to look up where I'd seen this before I went to bed last night, but looks like we've got at least a release month of the new U2 CD (October... and the trees are stripped bare... Of all they wear... What do I care?...)
This is from www.atu2.com.
Hmm... produced by Eno and Lanois again? Could it be another Unforgettable Fire?
ALBUM NAME: unknown
PRODUCER(s): believed to be Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois
ALBUM RELEASE DATE: October, 2008, according to Paul McGuinness
FORMATS: unknown
TRACKLIST: unknown
POSSIBLE SONGS MENTIONED:
These are songs that have been mentioned in the buildup to U2's next studio album:
* "No Line On The Horizon" - Bono and Edge played this song for a USA Today writer during an in-the-car interview at the Sundance Film Festival. On hearing it, writer Anthony Breznican says "heavy distortion fills the car," and later adds: "The song is rough, weaving between brutal guitar blasts underscoring the mellow title refrain." Edge explains that the song "It came out of a new distortion box that my guitar tech got."
* Unknown Title - in the same interview with Anthony Breznican, Bono and Edge played a second song whose opening lyric is, "It's six o'clock...". Bono tells Breznican that numbers are significant in each of the new songs.
* "If I Could Live My Life Again" - Bono says this song is "inspired by the great Argentinian poet Jorge Luis Borges." Bono said he had just begun the song while speaking with author Michka Assayas in December, 2005. Their interview appears as the extra material in the paperback version of Bono in Conversation with Michka Assayas.
* "Love Is All We Have Left" - a song Bono named during his May, 2006, trip to Africa as one that he had recently written. "It’s like an old Broadway tune. I thought it was a Frank Sinatra song," Bono said.
* "North Star," a song from the How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb sessions which included a guest organ appearance from Michael W. Smith. In this CCM article, Smith describes the song as a tribute to Johnny Cash.
* "Mercy", one of the last songs to get cut from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, described in Blender magazine as "a six-and-a-half-minute outpouring of U2 at its most uninhibitedly U2-ish"
* "Lead Me In The Way I Should Go" -- a contender for Atomic Bomb first mentioned in this February, 2003, interview with Bono in Grammy Magazine
* "You Can't Give Away Your Heart" - a contender for Atomic Bomb first mentioned in SPIN magazine

I dont understand the appeal of U2. I frankly find them overrated and annoying. I do like Bloody Sunday though because I have a passion for Ireland and the Troubles. But I will not share my opinion on what I think of the IRA because I dont want to be yelled at wink wink nod nod;) ;) I will say that I am somewhat sympathetic to the Cause alright Im ducking now LOL
Not to get off topic but it is an Irish band

I dont understand the appeal of U2. I frankly find them overrated and annoying. ...A lot of people do, I think. And a lot of folks who liked them in their lesser known earnest early younger days dropped them like a hot potato as soon as they got the multimedia publicity overkill during the Joshua Tree/Rattle and Hum days. And a lot of the people who stuck that out pretty much said "That's it, put a fork in me, I'm done" when U2 followed up with Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and Pop and all the glitz and glitter and oversized lemons of their resulting tours.
For whatever the reason, I've stuck with them for nearly 25 years. Can't say I've cared for EVERYTHING they've done, Pop and Atomic Bomb are probably my least played CDs of theirs, but Unforgettable Fire, Achtung Baby, and All That You Can't Leave Behind are probably three of the MOST played CDs of anything that I own.
They've come a long way in 30 years! ;)

And it's official. All my 3D music got booted off the CF card in my PDA in favor of the audio rip of my U2 Vertigo tour DVD. Sorry guys!
Man, I miss the 1gb card I had in there originally, that thing held a LOT of music. Of course the fact that the Vertigo rip is over 2 hours long and 300mb plus, I had to delete everything else I had on there too; the only thing that I had room to leave was my TBN Glory Revealed mp3. So at least MAC is still on there. ;)
(And I just checked. Looks like the further adventures of "Beano" are through for the moment in Pearls Before Swine, no sign of Rat doing Beano in the strip this morning. :( Oh well. Ego-man shows up occasionally still, so maybe Beano will too. :P )

Its mostly the fact that Im sick of hearing about Bono this and Bono that Bono is all over the news. Its really starting to get on my nerves. No doubt he is a great guy but there are more important people in the world than him I.E. our troops fighting in Iraq and other places.
To me Bono is just a man who needs Christ I know I know he talks the talk but does he walk the walk.
This post is by no means daragatory toward Bono or any U2 fans on here. But one of my pet peeves is hearing how great and godlike Bono is all the time. I have more important things to do than to hear what good deed the great god Bono did this week.
I hope Im not trying to start trouble Im just sharing my feelings on this subject

I gotta be honest, Mike. When I see a thread with a title that indicates that the subject is something I am not interested in, I avoid the thread. The fact that you have posted twice in this thread, titled "U2", to say that you are not interested in U2, is puzzling to me.

Hey, he's keeping me from being nearly the only one posting in this thread. LOL. I don't mind a little opposing opinion, not everyone has to think they're great.
But one of my pet peeves is hearing how great and godlike Bono is all the time. I have more important things to do than to hear what good deed the great god Bono did this week.
I'm more into the group as a whole, myself, but since you specifically mentioned Bono...
I knew I'd seen him here and there, involved with his various and sundry causes, but didn't think I'd seen him so much that it was causing me any Bono Burnout. Then I googled "bono causes" and realized how many I'd forgotten! LOL. He IS kind of all over the place, isn't he?
Not that that bugs ME at all. He's got "save the world" on his to-do list (see below, from an article about how he lost some of his "cool" factor by appearing on American Idol)...
Let’s face it: being cool is not on the Bono’s agenda. In fact, I actually saw his daily planner yesterday and this is what it said:
1) Work on finding words that rhyme with spider
2) Make sure facial hair color matches hair on top of head
3) Save world
See? “Be Cool” did not even make the list.
...he's just trying to save the world, once cause at a time. Unfortunately for him, some of them are very public causes and the press is right there to cover them, and him with them. But if you had the time, the inclination, and the bucks to try and save the world, wouldn't you do it?
Bono's not trying to be a god, or a saint, or perfect, or anything like that. And I'm sure he'd be the first to tell you that. He's just being, well, Bono. *shrugs*

Oh, and for the old school fans out there, have you seen? Based on the success of the Joshua Tree reissue, they're going to be re-releasing something like the first 2 or 3 U2 CDs from the early days, remastered, sometime in May.

Ok, back to U2 ...
A lot of Rattle and Hum was filmed at my university (ASU's Sun Devil Stadium specifically) about nine months before I started attending there. I was in town at the time, but I was a poor uncool 17-year-old who had only been to Neil Diamond concerts with his mom.
The Unknown Gomer

Rattle and Hum was great, despite what the critics said about it. And the Sun Devil footage (which I think made up the majority of the live concert footage if I remember right, it's been a while since I've sat down to watch it) was some of the best of the film. But I did the whole nine yards with it: saw the movie, and ended up buying the vhs, the soundtrack, and the book to go with it. Also got it in some sort of video disc format later that's not DVD but is playable on my PC, not sure WHAT format it is.
I've got 5 or 6 vhs tapes of Rattle and Hum video outtakes that someone sent me way back when. I don't think I've ever sat and watched them ALL, there's only so many times you can see the same scenes reshot over and over and over and over again before it drives you wacko. LOL.
Probably need to convert those over to DVD before they have a melt down and get eaten by the VCR though. I just duped two ZooTV bootleg vhs tapes that I've had for years over to DVD this weekend and they didn't come out half bad.
(And nothing wrong with seeing Neil Diamond, by the way. ;) )

I have an mp3 of the Dancing Queen cover - it's great!
Hey Jason, I'm pretty sure that U2's covered Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond before.
Also, I've heard a lot of comments from people who are annoyed by Bono's humanitarian work. I wonder why people are so perturbed by someone who has a heart for the poor?

Also, I've heard a lot of comments from people who are annoyed by Bono's humanitarian work. I wonder why people are so perturbed by someone who has a heart for the poor? I don't get it either. It's probably mostly people who don't LIKE U2 anyway, and they just get sick to death of seeing the lead singer of a band they don't like show up in the news every time you turn around. Probably the way I feel about Hannah Montana, when I almost threw up in my cereal bowl this weekend when I saw that Rooms to Go actually had a Hanna Montana bedroom set. *hurl hurl hurl!*. ;)
The difference IS that he IS helping people and doing work for causes, and he just gets the publicity because he's the lead singer of one of the biggest bands in the world at the moment. The only way to keep him out of the news is to tell him to stop doing the charity work that gets him the news coverage, and who in their right mind would want that. I mean, even the aforementioned "uncool" American Idol appearance was for a good cause, if I remember correctly.

NEW YORK - The second “American Idol” charity event is set for April 9, with a lineup that includes Bono, Brad Pitt, Miley Cyrus, Fergie, Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood.
Last year’s “Idol Gives Back” show raised $76 million to benefit underprivileged children.

I've been listening to my stash of U2 CDs pretty much non-stop since I saw U23D the first time. Started with "Boy" and am up to "Pop" now. Actually that one has been stuck in my CD player in the car for the last week, each time I think I'm going to swap it, one of the songs I like on it comes on and I end up leaving it in. LOL.
I have come to the conclusion that "Pop", while not being their greatest effort (probably the result of not being actually done with the album before they had to start touring for it), has some really REALLY good songs on it. Mofo is good, I like Gone, and I really had no idea that Staring at the Sun was on THIS CD. That's how little I listened to it before. And Wake Up Dead Man at the end is great too, I love that one.
Favorite CDs out of their catalog... "Boy", "Unforgettable Fire" and "All That You Can't Leave Behind" I think...
And anyone else think that the new CD needs to have a MUCH shorter title than the last two? :P

Karen, do you have the bonus "U2 The History Mix DVD"? How could I have missed that when I bought this a few years ago? Must have been after the intial release. That happened with the best of CDs, you had to get them early to get the b-sides, you know not only 90-00 but also 1980-2000. That is why I did not buy the new JT because I have the b-sides.
Give me some good reasons for buying U218 and exactly which version to buy. I had the cd/dvd (?) in my hands the weak it released, correction I had it purchased, but was in the car and buyer's remorse made me return it. A money thing at the time...

Don't have a lot of time this morning to post a LOT (plus I'd have to check at home to see which DVD I've got that came with one of my best of CDs), but I noticed the date of your show, the one that was 2 days after Red Rocks... that site I mentioned to you, the "I Will Follow" one, they've got your show - Kansas City June 8, 1983 - available for download in mp3 format.
And I'm a bad fan, I don't actually have U218 yet, I don't think. I was a little cash poor when it came out also, and couldn't see spending money on it when I actually had 99 percent of the songs already. May have to look into that again myself, now that I'm actually employed, although first on my list is the Joshua Tree re-release, I think. :)

Which U2 book? The BIG one, U2 by U2? Talk about DETAILED. And heavy! If you can get it in softcover, you might want to. I started reading it but got hung up at the War tour, after I picked up "Walk On" and discovered how much LIGHTER it was. LOL. I'd planned on reading the two side by side, to get the spiritual aspect of what they were doing at the same time as the detailed day by day touring aspect, but Walk On was just so much easier to hold, I just kept going with that one. :D

U2 is way more superior than neil diamond, and they are so much more excellent . did you see the video for the song they did with another fave group of my green day.
Unfortunately they play the song on my old favorite station http://www.pulse995.com - http://www.streamaudio.com/stations/player/pages/newplayer/index_win.asp?Owner=kzzq_ fm&public=&headertext=&Station=kzzq_fm&Mac=No&OptIn=&Streamtype=&filename=
and this a condemnation on the station moving from Christian to Christian/secular.

Oh BOY! (pun intended lol)
In other U2 news, Universal has set a July 22 release for remastered, expanded editions of the band’s first three albums: “Boy” (1980), “October” (1981) and “War” (1983).
Guitarist the Edge is overseeing the reissues, which will include the original album on a single-disc, 180-gram vinyl and in a two-CD package featuring B-sides, rare tracks and live material.
Including a DVD of some of their earlier footage with each one would be nice too.
Criminy! Between the new U2 re-issues and the 3D CD coming out in July, I guess I'd better start accumulating more Amazon points, or I'll never be able to afford it all! ;)

From the U2 News feed...
I like the sound of a new CD by the end of the year, that would be very nice.
Doesn't look like they're including DVDs on any of THESE reissues. :( A little disappointing there...

Boy is being rereleased yeah and so is october yeah, two weekish my pastor shared this story when he was doing a message on friendship when u2 were touring in the states in the 90s or 80s they were in the southern states and this guy said to bono don't sing pride in the name of love because i am going to be at the concert and if you do i will shoot you , but that night bono sang that song with his eyes closed and by an incredible stroke of genius adam clayton stood right in front of bono to shield him from the threat and it was incredible because there are alot of people at my church who don't realize that u2 are christians . have you seen the youtube coverage of the nelson mandela 90th birthday party concert , there is some coverage of bono and the edge singing happy birthday to nelson mandela the stevie wonder song happy birthday check it out .

Pam, as documented here many times, I am convinced that, at the very least, Bono and the Edge are Christians. However, supporting the evil Nelson Mandela does not help back up that idea.
Mandela stood up against one evil system (apartheid), which is great, but when it was over, he made it clear he was very much in favor of another evil system (communism). He expressed admiration for murderers like Castro. The fact that Nelson Mandela is as admired as he is is saddening.

I'd not heard that before, so Snoped it first, didn't find anything about it there, so googled a little further, and I think this might be what Pam was talking about. It actually took place in Arizona, vs any of the southern states, although it sounds like they've had minor ones (if any death threats can be considered "minor") all over, but rarely anything they truly took seriously, except for this one.
This was from In Conversation with Michka Assayas, I think.

Yes that is what i was talking about since i was paying super close attention to what my pastor was talking i always do, since he totally rocks and is an excellent pastor, anyway i was on the bus going into the city this morning and i saw this guy crossing the street who looked like the edge he had the same hat and same face shape and beard i went that's the edge from U2 out loud .
To the person who said that nelson mandala he is not evil, how ever the false president of zimbeawea is evil .

You want to back that up? I can show you hundreds of quotes where Mandela advocates communism and defends Castro, a murderer who orders people killed if they disagree with him. Mandela's wife used to throw burning tires around the necks of those who disagreed with her. He's an evil man, period.

I think I had heard that about his wife. She was the second of his three marriages.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnie_Madikizela-Mandela
Her reputation was damaged by what many considered her sometimes bloodthirsty rhetoric, the most noteworthy example of this being a speech she gave in Munsieville on April 13, 1985, where she endorsed the practice of necklacing in the struggle to end apartheid. She said, "with our boxes of matches and our necklaces we shall liberate this country".
Wiki did not have the details on Castro or communism:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_mandela
NewsMax did - http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2005/5/24/104607.shtml
"The cause of Communism is the greatest cause in the history of mankind!'" proclaimed Nelson Mandela in 1961. "There's one place where Fidel Castro stands out head and shoulders above the rest. That is in his love for human rights and liberty!" proclaimed Saint Mandela as Castro awarded him Cuba's prestigious Playa Giron Award.
I've learned some stuff...
