Once upon a time …….. There was a six year old girl. She just started school that year. Her teacher, Miss Beth worried about her. She wasn’t interacting with the other kids. She always kept to herself. At nap time Miss Beth would see her crying sometimes. Then there was the way she always kneeled by her mat before she went to sleep. She had such an unusual name and because it was different all the kids would make fun of her. Her name was Jade. A beautiful name, but the other kids didn’t care they all laughed and teased. One time Miss Beth was waiting for all the kids to go to sleep she over heard Jade say this.
“Dear God, it’s me…Jade I mean. Some of the other kids were mean to me today but you already knew that didn’t you? You know where my daddy is too don’t you! I mean I know where he is but you know ‘zactly where he is. I hope you’ll bring him home safe. I miss him you know…Well that’s all I love you God. Bye!”
As Miss Beth wiped her eyes she watched Jade crawl onto her mat with the biggest smile on her face. She looked so angelic. While the kids slept Miss Beth was busy getting ready for show and tell and then the next day was parent’s day. Jade was the first to wake up. All the rest followed slowly. When everyone was up Miss Beth started show and tell. The first kid up was Jerry. He was one of the class clowns/ bullies. He stood up and pulled a snake out of his pockets causing all the girls to scream. Miss Beth rushed over and took it from him.
“Jerry, there will be no more of that you understand?” Miss Beth asked.
“Yes ma’am.” Jerry said.
“Okay now. Next?”
One by one all the kids presented their show and tell item without any more mishaps. Before Miss Beth knew it Jade’s turn was there. Jade pulled a beautiful carved jewelry box out of her backpack. On it was carved this “a jewelry box for my precious Jade” She held it up proudly and told all the kids how it had came from Iraq where her daddy was. All of the kids laughed and scoffed and Robbie another bully yelled out
“I bet you stole that!”
The poor little one burst into tears. Right then the bell rang signaling all the kids to go home. Jade ran out the door before Miss Beth could get the chance to talk to her. Miss Beth was hoping to talk to her parents tomorrow. All the rest of the day Miss Beth couldn’t get little Jade out of her head. She called Jade’s mother who confirmed that her husband was indeed in Iraq, but he had been reported MIA and she didn’t know how to tell Jade. The next day every kid but Jade showed up with both parents, but Jade didn’t care her daddy was supposed to be coming home today. She even left a note for him on the door in case he came while they were gone he’d know where they were. Jade’s mother saw this and wiped a tear from her eye, but not quick enough for Jade not to notice. Jade said,
“Don’t cry Mommy, Daddy will come home cause I asked God to bring him home safely. He’s coming home I know it!”
When they got to school all the kids in the class stared at her. One by one all the kids came up and introduced their parents and told them what they did. All through this Miss Beth kept seeing this strange man peek into the class room, but before she could confront him Jade’s turn was up. She started walking up to the front with this cute little blue dress and black shoes. She was clutching her mothers hand in her own. Before she even got to the front Robbie yelled out,
“Hey where’s your daddy or ain’t you got one?”
Jades lower lip trembled, but she bravely went on. When she got to the front she introduced her mother and told them how she worked in an office. She then turned to Robbie and said
“I do have a daddy and he is fighting for our freedom and, and he is amazing! He’s in Iraq right now, but he IS coming home he is! I know he is!” A tear slipped down Jades cheek. Right then there was a knock on the door and Miss Beth went to see who it was. In walked a strange man. With a squeal Jade ran and jumped in his arms yelling
“Daddy!”
Jades mother fell to her knees crying and saying
“Thank You God! Thank you!’
Over and over she said this. She finally got up and kissed her husband and asked him how. He said they would talk later. That day Jade left those doors with the most radiant, beautiful, and angelic smile.
She left holding her daddy’s hand.
