The enemy has wreaked havoc in other racial groups in other ways, including my own (Caucasian). But this one really is heartbreaking to read.

That was a heart wrenching article.

Here is what I feel something from it worthy of consideration:

"The experts - and the killers - say a mentor might have saved them, anyone from the outside who could have shown them another way to be a man."

Did you hear that? Where are the Christians? Where is the church? Can we be mentors from the outside? What about the African American church? Can they do something if skin color is too much of a barrier?

Are we willing to put ourselves at risk to show these kids another way to be a man (or woman)?

Unless you've lived in areas near there, it's really hard to grasp what is going on.

I had a route to an area similar to that location in East Palo Alto back in the late eighties. Depending on when you would be going there (closer to dusk) you'd have to call to see if the local police could spare a patrol to give you some presence as you did your delivery and got out.

I would like to think that Jesse, Al, and the rest of the Black Coalition could march on areas like this and simply take them over with kindness and be the mentors kids in that town need, but that also isn't profitable nor "star" type of headlines. I really doubt "white - CCM style Churches" could even get close to making an impact before being run off our of intimidation and fear. Although, I've heard some great things about a guy in Memphus, TN who is doing just that...

Rob, you hit it right on man. Al, Jesse, and those of their ilk are too busy trying to raise money for their political agendas than to be bothered with real issues like this.

I pray that God would move on people living near there. That a real change can be made.

Despite what you think, Al and Jesse and others are concerned about the poor. They fight for the rights of the poor, which is a very noble issue... something the conservatives don't look at as a moral issue. Based on GWB's response during Katrina, it is evident to me that poor, impoverished people don't hold the same weight as GWB's elite friends. What has GWB done for the poor of America? He recently rejected legislation that would have given healthcare coverage to children of poor families. So despite your feelings that Al and Jesse do nothing, they do far more than GWB.

I think they are concerned about the poor, but they have a vested interest in telling people that they have no hope without legislation. They are sincere about the poor, but their solutions are wrong.

They fight for the rights of the poor, which is a very noble issue... something the conservatives don't look at as a moral issue.

Ridiculous statement. I'm a conservative and I posted this. My pastor is a conservative and his whole sermon yesterday was about how helping the poor is an essential part of Christian life.

Do you recall who that was? I live in Memphis and have not heard of this. (Typical-you never hear any good news in our media). We have a terrible problem here, and if someone is getting results, that's something I'd like to hear more about.

I don't think those making under $80k per year are poor.

They do something, just not much good, IMHO they have just as much agenda, as you would probably say about GWB.

I was just thinking about gun laws today. They would not help IMHO.

Story of a long time Black Lutheran pastor who died November 30th, story touched me so i figured in the face of a saddening story like the one Tree has provided hopefully this can supply some balance

Interestingly enough I am in a class called Black Theology, and it is based around Black Liberation Theology.

I gotta agree with Tree here, this is an absolutely absurd statement. There are plenty of conservatives who have a genuine sincere interest in helping the poor. Maybe you shouldn't be so quick to lump all conservatives in with GWB.

I don't question Al and Jesse's sincerity but there is no denying that they use their crusades for the oppressed to further their own publicity.

Bill Cosby was on Oprah a few weeks back with a Harvard professor, also black, talking about how upwards around 50% of urban black youth drop out of high school, and it some areas it's around 75%. 900,000 black men are in jail today and today a high profile black man (Michael Vick) was sentenced to almost 2 years in jail. It is a tragedy what is happening and if only the racial barriers could be completely broken down, then we could see real change.

I think they also noted that (forgot the figures) most black kids grow up without a dad. Very tragic indeed.

I was just in Oakland and will be going to scool in that area in a few months, the place is HUGE! I do believe that God is working there but the gangs are massive in number and just like alot of places in the US it's would be really hard if not impossible to just cruz up in Oakland and "be a role model" for the local gangbangers.
I did work for the Boys and Girls Club in Dallas TX a few years back and it is a very hard Job.It takes years and years to develope relationships between street kids and an outsider.

I pray for all the believer that are trying to help the Oakland kids, may God give them patience, understanding and safety.
